Cary, NC (May 11, 2002) The Carolina Courage dueled the Boston Breakers to a 1-1 draw at SAS Stadium in Cary, North Carolina. With the tie, the Courage remains unbeaten and the Breakers pick up their first road point of the season.
Danielle Fotopoulos opened the scoring for the Courage in the 35th minute, after receiving a nice pass from defender Staci Burt. Fotopoulos took a couple of touches, using her 5' 10" frame to hold off the closing Boston defender, and fired a hard shot on goal. Breakers' keeper Karina LeBlanc was able to get a hand on the shot, but could not keep it out of the net.
Boston evened up the match in the second half on a goal from Maren Meinert. After Carolina goalkeeper Kristin Luckenbill parried a Kristine Luckenbill blast, the German forward chased down the rebound and tucked it into the open net. It was Meinert's fourth goal of the 2002 campaign.
Luckenbill was spectacular in goal once again, recording seven saves.
Playing without its Norwegian stars Hege Riise and Unni Lehn, the Courage struggled to control the midfield.
"We know that we have to be able to play games without Hege, so this was a step for us in terms of proving our ability to play without her," said Head Coach Marcia McDermott.
"She's a world class player, so of course we're going to miss her," echoed Courage forward Danielle Fotopoulos. "But you go on with it and do what it takes as a team to win. Or get a tie."
The Courage will travel to Washington, D.C. to take on the Mia Hamm and Washington Freedom on Saturday, May 18th at RFK Stadium. The match will not be televised, but the Courage will return the following week to take on the Philadelphia Charge at home at SAS Stadium.
