Carolina Courage News Release
Boston, MA (June 21, 2003) - Courage defender Erin Baxter scored her first career goal in the WUSA to pace a surging Carolina Courage squad over the Boston Breakers, 1-0, at Nickerson Field on Saturday. The Courage (4-5-2) is unbeaten in its last five games, and has climbed within three points of first place in the league standings. Despite the loss, Boston (5-4-2) remains in first place, one point ahead of four teams who are tied for second, pending the outcome of Sunday's games.
In an exciting and evenly played contest, Erin Baxter notched the game's only goal. Unmarked at the top of the six yard box, Baxter nodded home a Brooke O'Hanley corner kick to put Carolina ahead in the 35th minute.
Kristin Luckenbill made five saves to earn her third consecutive shutout. She now owns the league's longest shutout streak this season with 336 scoreless minutes.
The Courage's three-game road trip continues on Wednesday night, when the team heads to San Jose for a midweek match-up against the CyberRays. Then Carolina heads back up north for a Saturday night showdown with the New York Power.
