Carolina Courage News Release
Cary, NC (June 14, 2003) - Two impressive goalkeeping efforts from Carolina's Kristin Luckenbill and Atlanta's Melanie Wilson resulted in a 0-0 stalemate at SAS Stadium on Saturday night. Wilson recorded seven saves, while Luckenbill stopped five shots en route to her second consecutive shutout.
After a rocky beginning to the 2003 season in which the Courage lost five of its first six matches, Carolina is unbeaten in its last four games, going 2-0-2.
Both teams had outstanding chances to steal victory in the closing minutes.
With only one minute remaining in regulation time, Atlanta forward Maribel Dominguez lofted a ball eight yards in front of goal, where Hooper broke free of a defender. Hooper struck a close range volley, but it sailed just over the crossbar.
Seconds later, in injury time, Danielle Fotopoulos found herself wide open in front of the Atlanta goal in the 90th minute, but mishandled the feed from Birgit Prinz. Beat keeper Melanie Wilson came charging out to smother the loose ball.
The Courage, who has scored 13 goals in its previous five games, was held scoreless for the first time this season. It is the first time the Courage did not score this season.
