Tennessee Valley Raptors News Release
Huntsville, AL - After spending the 2002 off-season healing from a broke leg left, quarterback Wes Counts, is ready to return for his second season with the Tennessee Valley Vipers.
Counts led the Vipers to a 9-1 record before the injury. He completed 152-of-259 passes for 1,793 yards and 30 touchdowns. He completed 58.7% of his passes and only threw five interceptions. He also rushed for 17 yards and eight touchdowns. He was named Viper Player of the game three times and set a Viper record with four rushing touchdowns against Mobile. His season-high in completions was 24 and attempts was 39 both at Memphis. His high in passing yards was 280 at Macon and touchdowns were seven at Quad City.
"We are excited as an organization to have Wes back," Vipers head coach, Kevin Guy, said. "He takes care of the football and has the leadership qualities you like in a quarterback. The doctors have cleared him to play and say that his leg is stronger with the rod in it. I'm just glad we don't have to fly in this league, because he would not make it through the metal detectors."
The Vipers were also assigned former Houston Cougar defensive back, Bachary McGruder. He lettered four years at Houston from 1997-2001 and redshirted during the 1998 season. He played in 35 games and recorded 55 tackles, four tackles-for-loss for 18 yards, one sack for eight yards, one interception and nine pass break ups. He prepped at Waxahachie High School, where the Dallas Morning News, Houston Chronicle, Houston Daily News, Fort Worth Star Telegram and Waco Tribune-Herald listed him as one of the Top 50 players in the state.
The Vipers also picked back up David Sucura, who was released by the Buffalo Destroyers on Monday.
