Reading Express News Release
Reading, PA - The Green Bay Blizzard shook up the Reading Express tonight defeating them 55-32 in a battle that that shifted in Green Bay's favor for the second half. LaRon Council was a major asset to the Blizzard team scoring three of the seven touchdowns and recording 81 rushing yards.
The Blizzard scored first in the game when Donovan Porterie connected with Desmond Tardy for a one- yarder that went unanswered until the second quarter.
The Express' Michael London intercepted a pass when the Blizzard was in scoring position and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown, making the score 7-6. Defensively, London also recorded two unassisted tackles and was a terror during the game putting major pressure in the backfield.
After that, it seemed to be a battle of who could score faster because two minutes later Porterie passed to Bryan Pray for 22 yards to further their lead. But just three minutes after that Express answered with A.J. McKenna hitting Joshua Floyd in the end zone to close the gap 14-12.
Later in the second quarter, Council debuted with an 8-yard rushing touchdown. Council went on to score back-to-back in the fourth quarter when the Blizzard was just off of the goal line, proving to be their go-to guy to push through the end zone.
McKenna found Chris Shubert open 28 yards away to score just before half-time, 24-19.
The Blizzard found a new wave of energy in the second half that the Express just couldn't shut down. Kicker Adrian Trevino ended the first half and began the second half with field goals, 30 yards and 22 yards respectively.
"The first half we were really gelling, but in the second half we lost focus and we stumbled." London said.
B.J. Hill picked up Express' Erik Rockhold short field goal attempt and ran it back 57 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.
In response, McKenna scored a touchdown of his own off the quarterback keeper for 3 yards in the beginning of the fourth making it 34-25, giving the Express a fighting chance to make a comeback.
That dream was soon shattered when Hill had a kickoff return for 40 yards, followed by the two Council touchdowns extending their lead to 55-25.
Ronald Thompson made a 15 yard touchdown pass to Jarvis Wilson right before the final minute of the game, but it was too late, the Blizzard had already claimed victory.
"We'll go back and look at film from games like this, even though we didn't win," Express Head Coach Mark Steinmeyer said, "and use it as a teaching tool to let the guys learn from their mistakes and hopefully become better players."
