Cougars Sign Tovar For Fifth Anniversary Season
Stockton, CA - Oct. 20, 2009 - The California Cougars, of the Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL-Pro), have agreed to contract terms with forward and five year arena soccer veteran Enrique Tovar, it was announced today. Per club policy, terms of the deal will not be disclosed.
The Cougars are the defending Professional Arena Soccer League champions. They kickoff their fifth consecutive season of professional indoor soccer at Stockton Arena on November 8 versus Luis Hernandez and the "Stars of Mexico." Ticket information is available by calling the Cougars office at (209) 373-1550 and by visiting www.californiacougars.net.
Tovar, 30, spent his first three professional indoor seasons with the Cougars between 2005 and 2008 before joining the Rockford Rampage of the National Indoor Soccer League last season. Tovar played in 18 games, netting 10 goals and totaling seven assists for 28 points with the Rampage. The forward had played three straight years in Stockton with the Cougars before his move to the NISL. He returns to the club for their fifth consecutive season of professional indoor soccer in Stockton.
"Tovar will help fill solidify the target spot this year for us," said Cougars head coach Antonio Sutton. Sutton added: "we've lost both (Aaron) Susi and (Bernie) Lilavois this year and "KiKi" (Tovar) will help make up for the goals we lose without those two on the field.
"His size, strength and knowledge of the indoor game make him a key piece to our team. He's also an all-around great teammate and his humor fits us well. He'll help brighten up our practices and I know I'm looking forward to working with him this year. It's a blessing to have him back."
Tovar netted 67 goals over three seasons with the Cougars. His 157 total points is second all-time in Cougars franchise history. He is third in goals (67) and fifth in assists (31) among all Cougars players since 2005.
Tovar led the Cougars in points and was 10th in scoring among all Major Indoor Soccer League players in both the 2006-07 (28 games, 26 goals, 10 assists and 63 points) and the 2007-08 (27 games, 29 goals, 13 assists and 74 points) seasons. The 2007-08 season was California's last as a member of the now defunct Major Indoor Soccer League.
Tovar scored 13 goals and posted 11 assists, earning 24 points in 26 games played for the team in his first season (2005-06).
Prior to coming to the Cougars, Tovar played with the USL Pro Selects League's California Gold in 2004 and was a member of the San Francisco Soccer Football Associations Premier Division in 2003 and 2004, where he was the league's top scorer in 2004.
A member of the San Diego State men's soccer program from 2000-2002, Tovar was named a Second Team all-MPSF Pacific Division honoree and was selected to the 2001 NSCAA/Adidas Division-I Men All-Region Second Team.
The Cougars open the 2009-10 season against the "Stars of Mexico" on November 8 at Stockton Arena. The "Stars" team is led by Luis Hernandez, Guadalupe Castaneda and goalkeeper Oscar Dautt. Hernandez has appeared in two other "Stars of Mexico" events in Stockton. He was a featured member of the "Stars" team that drew more than 8,000 fans to Stockton Arena in February 2007.
Individual tickets to the "Stars of Mexico" event are available by calling the Stockton Arena box office at (209) 373-1700. Group and season ticket packages are available through the Cougars office by calling (209) 373-1550.
