Cottonmouths Newcomer Mele Named Easton Player of the Week

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (December 17, 2013) - The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) today announced Steve Mele of the Columbus Cottonmouths is the Easton Player of the Week for December 9-15.

Mele scored five goals, including three on the power play and one shorthanded, and added four assists in three games in leading the Cottonmouths to a pair of wins last weekend.

On Thursday, the Bronx, NY native tied the league-high for goals and points in a game this season, scoring four times and adding an assist in an 8-6 win over Louisiana. After assisting on the first of six second-period goals for Columbus, Mele scored twice himself in the period before adding another pair of goals in the third, including the game-winner with just over five minutes remaining. His four goals also tied the Cottonmouths' team record for goals in a game. After being held scoreless on Friday in a 4-0 loss to Knoxville, Mele came back on Saturday with a one-goal, three-assist performance in a 5-2 win over Huntsville.

Mele played collegiately at American International College before joining the ECHL's Greenville Road Warriors following his senior season last year, where he scored four points in nine games. Prior to attending college, posted 60 points in 60 games for the Cornwall Colts of the Central Canada Hockey League during the 2008-09 season.
