New York Cosmos News Release
NEW YORK (Jan. 8, 2014) - The New York Cosmos announced today that defender Hunter Freeman has signed a contract extension with the team. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"Being part of the Cosmos reboot and winning the Soccer Bowl during our first season back was a tremendous achievement for me personally," Freeman said. "I truly feel like we're building something special here, so I wanted to come back and help continue that. My family also loves being in New York and we're looking forward to 2014 with the team."
Freeman, 29, started at right back in the Cosmos' 2013 Soccer Bowl title-winning game against the Atlanta Silverbacks. During the regular season, he made 12 appearances (all starts) as the Cosmos also won the 2013 NASL Fall Season.
"Hunter was an important player for us last season, not just on the field, but in the locker room as well," head coach Giovanni Savarese said. "He's a perfect player for the style of play we like to instill on our club."
Freeman joined the Cosmos in February 2013 after playing in more than 120 matches in Major League Soccer with the Colorado Rapids, New York Red Bulls, Toronto FC and Houston Dynamo. Freeman has also spent time as a professional overseas, playing for IK Start of the Norwegian Tippeligaen in 2009 and 2010.
Freeman became the seventh overall pick in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft after a standout career at the University of Virginia where he started 60 matches in three years and set a new school record for assists in a season (21). He has also made numerous appearances for the U.S. national team at the U-20 and U-23 levels.
