Corvallis Knights News Release


The Corvallis Knights captured their fourth West Coast League title on Aug. 16 by defeating Bellingham 6-4 in an exciting decisive Game 3 at Goss Stadium.

A two-run homer in the seventh inning by Roman Garcia of USD gave the Knights a 5-4 lead and brilliant defense and relief pitching in the eighth and ninth innings carried the Knights to the finish line.

Congratulations to the team and coaching staff for a job well done! And thank you, fans!! Thanks to an amazing and supportive community, Corvallis set a new total attendance record of 53,703 this season, for a per game average of 1,534. A tip of the cap to you!

Nobach earns all-West Coast League honors

Corvallis center fielder Kyle Nobach of Oregon State earned first-team all-West Coast League honors and catcher Zak Taylor (OSU), shortstop Andy Atwood (OSU) and starting pitcher Cameron Bishop (UC Irvine) earned second-team recognition on Aug. 15 when WCL president Donnie Marbut announced the league's 2016 honors and awards.

Eleven other Knights were named honorable-mention all-WCL. Also, the Corvallis Knights and the Wenatchee AppleSox shared the Jim Dietz Team Sportsmanship Award.

Mitch Haniger promoted to Arizona Diamondbacks

Former Knights outfielder Mitch Haniger (2010) of Cal Poly made his big league debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Aug. 16. He tripled, doubled and drove in three runs against the Mets at Chase Field. He became the tenth alum to appear in an MLB game this season, and the third from our 2010 club. (read more)

Trent Dupre and Roman Garcia named WCL Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively, for Aug. 8-16; Chris Burkholder earns Pitcher of the Week honors for Aug. 1-7.

Corvallis reliever Trenton Dupre of Washington State and slugger Roman Garcia of San Diego earned WCL Pitcher and Player of the Week honors, respectively, for their extraordinary performances in the postseason. (read more).

Knights right-handed pitcher Chris Burkholder of Dartmouth was named the West Coast League Pitcher of the Week for Aug. 1-7. (read more)

Knights rank high among WCL team, individual leaders

The Knights led the West Coast League in ERA this summer with a 2.64 mark. They were also No. 1 in fewest runs allowed (178), and No. 2 in strikeouts (424).

We were third in batting average (.259), and second in steals (113). However, we were only thrown out 34 times in 147 attempts (.769); steals leader Walla Walla (116) was thrown out 56 times (.674), so we were a much more efficient base-stealing club than the Sweets.

The Knights also fared well among the WCL's individual leaders.

AVERAGE: 6. Zak Taylor, .309 (43-139). 7. Andy Atwood, .308 (53-172).

HITS: 5. Atwood, 53.

RBI: 6. Atwood, 25.

STEALS: 4. Atwood, 19. 5. Emilio Alcantar, 18.

WINS: 8. Jacob Fricke, 5.

STRIKEOUTS: 10. Ryley Widell, 46.

ERA: 7. Aaron Pope, 2.08.

Giants trade alums Andrew Susac, Matt Duffy

The San Francisco Giants traded alum Andrew Susac (2009) to the Milwaukee Brewers and alum Matt Duffy (2010) to the Tampa Bay Rays on July 31. Here is more on those deals, from MLB.com.

Padres promote Nick Torres

San Diego promoted outfielder NIck Torres (2012) to El Paso of the triple-A Pacific Coast League. He was at San Antonio in the double-A Texas League.
