Correll Powers the Jackhammers! Joliet With Five in the Fifth for an 8-2 Win!

JOLIET-The Joliet JackHammers (21-34) scored five runs in a 5th inning that saw LF Brad Correll (1-5) smack a three-run home run to take a 7-2 lead before eventually earning an 8-2 win over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (25-25) before 3,440 fans at Silver Cross Field on Thursday morning.

The RedHawks scored a single run in the 1st inning against Joliet RHP Jason Richardson (2-7). SS Zach Penrpase (1-3) worked a one-out walk and moved to third base on a single by CF Nic Jackson (2-3).

Fargo-Moorhead added another run in the 3rd inning. Penprase hit a one-out double and stole third base. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Jackson for a 2-0 Fargo-Moohread lead.

The JackHammers tied the game with two runs in the 5th inning against Fargo-Moorhead RHP Aubrey Edens (0-1). 2B Danny Cox (1-4) reached base on a one-out error and moved to third base on a double by C Phil Avlas (2-4). CF Adam Klein (1-3) reached base on an error by Fargo-Moorhead SS Zach Penprase (1-3). Cox scored to put the JackHammers on the scoreboard at 2-1.

Klein stole second base and SS Kevin Rios (2-5) followed with an RBI single to score Klein for a 2-2 tied score.

The JackHammers sent nine men to the plate in the 5th inning. RF Wally Backman, Jr. (1-4) led off the inning with a single and stole second base. After 3B Andrew Pinckney (1-3) lined out and Cox struck out, Avlas worked a walk.

RedHawks manager Doug Simunic pulled Edens out of the game in favor of RHP Mike Finocchi. Klein singled to score Backman Jr. from second base for a 3-2 Joliet lead. Rios hit an RBI single to score Avlas for a 4-2 Joliet lead.

Correll tagged a three-run home run to give the JackHammers a 7-2 advantage.

Joliet added a run of insurance in the 7th inning on an RBI groundout by Backman, Jr.

Richardson went seven innings and allowed two runs on three hits to pick up his second win of the season. RHP Chad Blackwell held the RedHawks scoreless in the 8th inning and RHP Drew Shetrone worked a scoreless 9th to close out the win.

Loose Gravel: The JackHammers struck out eight men on Thursday, meaning everyone in the ballpark can use their ticket stub for a free baby blossom appetizer at any one of three Texas Roadhouse restaurants in the area: Joliet, Tinley Park and Naperville.

The JackHammers head to Kansas City to start a three-game series with the Kansas City T-Bones on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The JackHammers will start RHP Derek Barrows (1-0, 3.86) against a yet-to-be announced starter for Kansas City.
