Schaumburg Flyers News Release

SCHAUMBURG, IL-Juan Diaz went 2-4 with two RBIs and Josh Asanovich went 3-4 and scored three times as the Winnipeg Goldeyes took the last game of this four-game series, 7-3, over the Flyers in front of 4,156 fans at Alexian Field.

The Goldeyes got two on the board in the first inning off Flyers starter Ed Almonte. They got four straight singles from the top of the order, with RBI singles for Diaz and Kevin West.

The Flyers cut the lead to one in the bottom of the second. TJ Wilson, who had four RBIs in the series coming in, hit a two-out bloop single scoring Vince Harrison who was back in the lineup from injury.

But it was Juan Diaz again in the top of the third, the Flyers-killer this week, as he roped an RBI double to right center.

Victor Ferrante continued his incredible season in the bottom half of the third, driving home John Toussas with a double.

The Goldeyes added another run in the top of the fourth on a Patton single in which Ferrante tried to throw Adam Frost out at third but threw it away, sending Frost to the plate.

Almonte left the game in the sixth with the bases loaded and reliever Jim Popp walked in two runs, extending Winnipeg's lead to 7-2. Almonte pitched 6.1, giving up seven runs.

Travis Ezi provided some excitement for Flyers fans in the bottom of the seventh, jacking his second home run of the season to left center. Ezi and Felix Jose had two hits each for Schaumburg.

But that was it for the Flyers as they fell to Winnipeg 7-3. Despite taking the first two from the first-place Goldeyes, the Flyers have to settle for a split in the series.

Almonte drops to 4-6 on the season while Bear Bay is now 6-2 pitching seven innings and giving up three runs, joining teammate Ace Walker in getting his sixth win. Schaumburg now trails Winnipeg by five games in the Northern League and is back to .500 with a record of 26-26, while Winnipeg leaves Alexian Field at 30-20.

The Flyers begin a stretch of seven straight games against Gary, starting tomorrow night at the Steel Yard in Gary. First pitch is at 7:00 as Flyers LHP Carmen Pignatiello (4-5, 5.72) take on Gary's RHP Garret Holleran (0-1, 2.00).
