Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
The Corpus Christi Rayz signed their second veteran for the 2006-2007 season on Wednesday when they inked center, Matt Turek to a one-year deal. Turek is a ten-year veteran who will make his second stint in the Central Hockey League this season and first in Corpus Christi. Turek helps strengthen the Rayz offense and becomes the eighth official player for the upcoming season. The Rayz will begin the 2006-2007 season on October 21st when they host the Laredo Bucks at the American Bank Center. Individual tickets go on sale at all Ticketmaster locations on Monday, October 2nd.
Turek, 33, becomes the first veteran forward signed this season by the Rayz and brings a wealth of experience to Corpus Christi. In 583 career games, Turek has totaled 183 goals and 465 points. In five of his ten seasons, Turek has been a 20-goal scorer. This season with Corpus Christi will be his third in the CHL/WPHL. In 1999-2000, Turek played for the Alexandria Warthogs, and in 2004-2005, Turek captained the Lubbock Cotton Kings to their first and only division title in franchise history. In the two years combined, Turek has seen plenty of success averaging over a point per game. His CHL/WPHL totals are 136 points (40 goals, 96 assists) in 131 games. Rayz Head Coach, Ken McRae said he believes his new acquisition can continue that type of production.
"Matt is a point per game guy in the CHL," said McRae. "He brings great leadership qualities, which is something we'll welcome tremendously. He can also put up big points as well. He's a versatile player who will be an asset to our power play and overall offensive game."
In a decade of professional hockey, the Toronto, Ontario native has donned several different uniforms. Turek has played in three different North American professional hockey leagues (CHL, WPHL and ECHL) as well as spending one season each in Germany and Italy. However, despite Turek's extensive travels, last year was the only year in his career that he split time between multiple teams in the same season. Turek was a member of SHC Fassa in Italy and the ECHL's Pensacola Ice Pilots. In a shortened season, he tallied 20 points (10 goals, 10 assists) in 36 games.
Turek stands 6'0", 205 lbs. and is a two-way center who is known primarily for his faceoff and special teams ability. He joins defenseman Geno Parrish as the second veteran on the team. Turek is the sixth forward and eighth player signed by the Rayz.
The Corpus Christi Rayz are currently in preparation for the 2006-2007 season. The Rayz return to the American Bank Center is only 59 days away. Corpus Christi will begin their season at home on October 21st vs. the Laredo Bucks at 7:05pm. Season ticket packages and corporate sponsorship opportunities are currently available.
