Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC - The Charleston Battery defeated the Virginia Beach Mariners by a score of one goal to none tonight at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 3,476. Paul Conway scored the winner from the penalty spot in the 70th minute after Greg Simmonds was pulled down in the box. The Battery improve to 6-15-6, 24 points, eighth position in the Eastern Conference. The Mariners drop to 10-12-5, 35 points, and remain in 6th position in the Conference.
The Battery opened brightly and defender Steve Klein had an early chance in the 5th minute. Klein made a strong forward run but his shot from 20 yards out rose above the cross-bar.
The Mariners replied in the 15th minute as midfielder Jeff Bilyk worked his way into a shooting position. He pulled the ball onto his right foot 25-yards out and hit a hard shot, forcing a save from Charleston goalkeeper, Chris Doyle.
The best chance of the half fell to Charleston in the 27th minute. Midfielder Josh Smith pulled the ball back to Chris Goos ten yards from goal. Goos took a touch then fired wide of the right upright.
In the 36th minute Greg Simmonds received a quick pass inside from Klein. Simmonds' first touch took him past Mariners goalkeeper, Matt Nelson but his shot was cleared off the line by defender Joe Morelli.
The score remained level until the 70th minute when Simmonds made a surging run into the penalty-area. As he fired a shot he was pulled down by defender Russ Hutchinson. Veteran forward Paul Conway tucked the resultant penalty-kick past Nelson for his 91st career Battery goal.
Mariners forward Dante Washington had a chance to tie the game in the 88th minute but his header at the near-post flashed across the face of the goal.
The Charleston Battery's next match is an US Open Cup semifinal this Wednesday night versus Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire. The game will be played in Naperville, IL with kick off set for 8:30 PM (Newsradio 730 WSC). If the Battery defeats the Fire it will host the Lamar Hunt Open Cup Final at Blackbaud Stadium on Wednesday, September 22.
