Albany Firebirds News Release
ALBANY, NY - The Albany Conquest announced today that wide receiver Antwun Williams has been invited to participate in a three-day NFL rookie minicamp this weekend with the New York Jets. Williams will not be available for this Saturday's home game against the Tennessee Valley Vipers.
Williams, 25, is Albany's leading receiver through the first five weeks of the 2008 arenafootball2 season with 28 receptions for 431 yards and nine receiving touchdowns. He ranks 6th overall in af2 in receiving yards per game (107.8) and 10th in total receiving yards (431). The Prince George, Virginia native has had a steady progression of higher numbers and more offensive focus each week, leading up to last Saturday's game where he had his best performance of the year to date. Williams recorded six receptions for a game-high 163 yards and four touchdowns, including his second 45-yard touchdown catch of the season, to help Albany beat the Mahoning Valley Thunder on April 26th.
"Antwun truly deserves this opportunity," said Conquest Head Coach and Director of Football operations Jeff Hoffman. "He is an excellent player, a fierce competitor and a great person. I wish nothing but the best for him."
In 2007 with the Conquest, Williams finished tied for tenth in the af2 with 33 receiving touchdowns and he led Albany in total touchdowns with 36 (team-high 33 receiving, two fumble recoveries, one kick-off return).
Williams will report Friday to the Jets training facility at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. He joins all of New York's 2008 NFL Draft Picks, along with other undrafted and unsigned free agents. At the conclusion of the three-day workout on Sunday, Williams will either sign with the Jets or return to the Conquest for their Week 7 trip to Florida where they will face the Daytona Beach ThunderBirds on Thursday, May 8th.
This week Albany plays their second consecutive home game as they host the Tennessee Valley Vipers for the first ever meeting of the two franchises on Saturday, May 3rd at 7:00 pm at the Times Union Center.
