Albany Firebirds News Release
Albany, N.Y., December 20, 2004 â The Albany Conquest announced today at a press conference held at Pepsi Arena that Richard Davis is their new head coach for the 2005 arenafootball2 season.
"I am truly honored to have the opportunity to coach in Albany. It is a wonderful community that my family is excited to be a part of," said Coach Davis. "The Conquest have a loyal fan base that knows Arena Football. The Capital Region deserves a winning Arena Football team and let me tell you something â we're here to restore the glory," he added.
Davis has four years of head coaching experience in arenafootball2 and the fifth most wins in af2 history with a 39-19 record including playoffs. He was head coach and vice president of the now-defunct af2 team, Richmond Speed, from 2000 to 2003, a stint that included consecutive playoff appearances in 2001 and 2002. He led the Speed to an ArenaCup appearance in 2001 following division and conference championships that season.
"Coach Davis is someone that is quite familiar with winning games and we know that he is the man that is going to bring an ArenaCup Championship to the Capital Region," said Conquest General Manager Robert Zeig. "Following his stint in Richmond from 2000 to 2003, he had the most wins of any af2 head coach at the time and currently has the fifth most wins."
Davis has 11 years of coaching experience at the professional and college levels. As offensive assistant of NFL Europe's London Monarchs, he helped guide that squad to a World Cup title in 1991. He also was offensive coordinator at Langston University (Okla.) in 1992 and quarterback coach at the University of Connecticut in 1994. He was Vice President of Operations for the San Antonio Texans of the CFL from 1995 to 1996. He received his B.A. in communications from the University of Central Oklahoma. He and his wife Judy have two kids, Justin (13) and Chance (1).
"Coach Davis is someone with an immense passion for Arena Football and it's a welcoming thought to know that he has returned among the head coaching ranks in the league," said af2 Executive Director Jerry Kurz. "He is a coach that knows how to win and will be a great fit with the Albany Conquest," he added.
The Conquest are entering their fourth season and will play their home opener against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers on April 15. The season will consist of a 16-game schedule, including eight home dates at Pepsi Arena with all slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. The Conquest are offering a Holiday Season and New Year package until Jan. 31 that includes a limited edition sweatshirt with the purchase of 2005 season tickets.
