Conquest Games to be on Time-Warner Cable in 2003

Albany Firebirds News Release

ALBANY, NY – The exciting sport of Arena Football, with its smaller indoor field, offense-friendly rules, relentless action, and high scores, has broken into the Albany television market on Time-Warner channels. The first re-broadcast was this past Saturday at noon.

The home games of the Albany Conquest team will be coming live or on tape delay from the Pepsi Arena. The play-by-play commentary will be hosted by Dan Murphy, the Pepsi Arena announcer and the Sports Director for WTEN ABC-10, and color analysis provided by Rodney Smith, a former Albany Firebird player and radio football commentator.

The Albany Conquest won the Northeast Division Championship last year in the 28-team arenafootball2 (af2) League.

"This is the most exciting form of football I've ever seen", said team General Manager Robert Thompson. "I think televising the home games this year will help build fan interest and loyalty, and provide a fan-friendly atmosphere for parents to take their kids to games."

Unlike the NFL, home team players in the af2 stay at least half an hour after games to sign autographs for fans, and fans who recover out of bounds footballs get to keep them.

The rules of the game are slightly different than NFL play, making for much faster play and higher scores.

The Arena Football League (AFL) already has their games broadcast on Sundays on NBC.
