Connecticut Sun forward Nykesha Sales named WNBA Player of the Week

NEW YORK, June 28 – Nykesha Sales of the Connecticut Sun was named the WNBA Player of the Week for games played Monday, June 21 through Sunday, June 27.

Sales averaged 17.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.33 steals and shot 47.7 percent (21-for-44) from the field as the Sun posted a perfect 3-0 record on the week, including two victories over the defending champion Detroit Shock. Sales is currently ninth in the WNBA in scoring (15.6), fourth in steals (2.20) and eighth in three-point field goals made (23).

Sales began her week by posting 10 points and grabbing six rebounds in Connecticut's 63-58 victory over Indiana. She then posted her first double-double of the season scoring 22 points, pulling down 10 rebounds and added three steals, along with shooting 56.2 percent (9-for-16) from the field in an over-time victory against the Shock. Two days later she added 19 points, six rebounds and three steals, including the three-pointer that put the Sun ahead of the Shock for good in a 74-72 road victory, sweeping a home-and-home series versus Detroit.

Other candidates for WNBA Player of the Week were Charlotte's Tammy Sutton-Brown, Detroit's Swin Cash, Houston's Sheryl Swoopes, Phoenix's Diana Taurasi, Sacramento's Yolanda Griffith, San Antonio's Margo Dydek, Seattle's Lauren Jackson and Washington's Chamique Holdsclaw.

The WNBA began its much-anticipated eighth season with ratings for ABC's first four telecasts up 14 percent from a year ago. The season-opening telecast featuring the Phoenix Mercury at the Connecticut Sun was the highest rated WNBA game (regular season or playoffs) ever on ABC.
