Kansas City Comets News Release
The Comets went 1-2 in the MISL's 2003 Easter Seals Preseason Classic in Milwaukee this past weekend. All of the weekend's games were played in two 24-minute halves with a running clock at US Cellular Arena in Milwaukee.
On Friday, the team dropped a pair of close games, falling 3-1 to the Baltimore Blast in an afternoon contest and losing a 4-3 decision to the Philadelphia KiXX in a nightcap.
Baltimore keeper Scott Hileman turned away four of the five shots he faced in the first game. David Bascome's restart goal at 9:22 of the first half put the Blast on top, but Aleksey Korol tied the game for K.C. with a tally of his own at 14:49. P.J. Wakefield and Danny Kelly sealed the victory with second-half goals for Baltimore. DJ Horvath went the distance in goal for the Comets, saving eight of 11 shots.
The Comets fell behind the KiXX 4-1 early in the second half in Friday's second game, but pulled to within 4-3 with six minutes left on goals by Jamar Beasley and Franck M'Bemba. KiXX keeper Stuart Dobson (three saves) stood strong down the stretch and got the win in goal, while Eric Kenas (no first-half saves) and Josh Schreck (three second-half saves) split time in goal for the Comets. Beasley finished the game with a pair of goals.
Beasley scored the game-winning power play goal with under two minutes left in the game as the Kansas City Comets squeezed past the San Diego Sockers 4-3 in their final game of the tournament. Beasley's decisive score was his second of the game, and marked his second two-goal performance of the tournament. Casey Barton's goal at 16:30 of the second half tied the game at 3-3, setting the stage for Beasley's late heroics.
Winning goalkeeper DJ Horvath saved 10 of 12 shots in goal for the Comets. Brian Soell notched two assists for Kansas City.
