Comets Fall to Steamers in Opener

Kansas City, KS – The Kansas City Comets and St. Louis Steamers renewed their cross-state rivalry in front of 6,031 fans at Kemper Arena on Saturday night, and St. Louis rode two-goal performances from Steve Butcher and Jeff DiMaria to a 7-4 victory over the Comets. Brett Phillips made 12 saves in goal for the Steamers, getting the win, and DJ Horvath turned away 14 of 20 shots in the loss for Kansas City.

Steve Butcher notched the Steamers' first goal at 3:35 of the first, and Jamar Beasley answered just 32 seconds later with his first Comets goal at 4:07. Kansas City's Jeff Davis and St. Louis' Jeff DiMaria traded goals before the quarter was out to produce a 2-2 score after one.

Franck M'Bemba's power play goal at 4:21 of the second gave the Comets their last lead of the night at 3-2. The Steamers proceeded to ring off four unanswered goals, beginning with Daryl Doran's score at 14:13 of the second and ending with Craig Scheer's tally at 1:20 of the fourth, to assume a 6-3 lead.

Kansas City got one back at 9:10 of the fourth when Miodrag Djerisilo found the net, but Butcher iced the win when he beat sixth attacker Wes Wade for the final goal of the night at 14:17 to seal the 7-4 final score.

Notes: The Steamers and Comets combined for 33 minutes in penalties, 25 of which were assessed to St. Louis...Kansas City played without defender Vlatko Andonovski (knee), midfielder Sandre Naumoski (abdomen), and forward Anthony Maher (hernia)...The Comets return to action next Saturday, October 18, when the expansion Monterrey Fury come to town. Game time at Kemper Arena is 7:35 p.m.
