Kansas City Comets News Release
(Omaha, NE) - The Comets, who couldn't take advantage of numerous opportunities handed to them by the expansion Omaha Vipers, came back with a late scoring flurry to earn their first win of the season. A missed penalty kick, a yellow card, a Vipers player ejection, and multiple scoreless power plays almost cost the team dearly. The team came back from an 11-8 deficit late in the 4th quarter at the Omaha Civic Auditorium to defeat the Vipers 12-11.
The Comets struck first with time running out in the 1st period on a goal by Byron Alvarez. The Vipers lead at the half after 3-point goal off an inbounds play by Comets killer, Chili Farias. Vipers lead 3-2 at the half.
Both team heated up in the 2nd half, including tempers, as Vipers player, Le Petit was ejected from the game mid-way through the 3rd period. The Comets struck quickly at the start of the half with a quick turn-around goal by Geison Moura at the 4 minute mark. The Vipers would score the next 2 goals, one on a power play, the other on a 2-on-1 break. Late in the quarter, Byron Alvarez scored his second goal of the game to close out the period. Omaha lead 7-6 at the end of the 3rd quarter.
The Vipers scored the first two goals of the final period, including a short-handed goal by Chili Farias, his second of the game, giving him four goals in two games against the Comets. After inserting Vahid Assadpour as a sixth man for goalkeeper, Danny Waltman, the Comets came roaring back on back-to-back goals by Leo Gibson and Byron Alvarez's 3rd goal of the game.
