Kansas City Comets News Release
(Kansas City, MO) The Major Indoor Soccer League announced today that Comets' forward Byron Alvarez and defender Leo Gibson had earned First Team All-MISL honors for the 2010-2011 season. Forward Jamar Beasley was named to the league's Second Team. The All-MISL Teams were selected following a formal voting process that polled members of the media, as well as MISL coaches and general managers.
For Comets' Head Coach, Kim Roentved, having two of his players on the MISL First Team speaks volumes about the kind of year each player had. "Byron was incredible this year, leading the league in so many offensive categories," said the coach. "He was everything we hoped and more when we signed him.absolutely deadly when he had the ball in front of the goal."
Asked about Leo Gibson making the First Team, Roentved added: "For Leo to make the position switch that he did (from offense to defense) was one of the most unselfish, team-first moves I've ever seen as a coach or player," he said. "Without Leo in the back, we would not have finished as strong as we did, and I am so glad that the media and the other MISL teams recognized his incredible contribution."
On Jamar Beasley making the MISL Second Team: "Jamar was a spark for us every time he hit the field," Roentved said. "He did such an outstanding job finding the back of the net, and when he wasn't scoring, he was always in position to help someone else get the goal."
About the Comets Players:
Byron Alvarez: Alvarez was vital to the Comets surprising run to the MISL Playoffs, while leading the league in scoring with 80 points. Alvarez also led the league in goals scored (33), hat tricks (5) and tied for the league-lead in game-winning goals with five. Alvarez scored at least one point in 17 games this season, and also posted the longest goal-scoring streak of the year (9 games) and point-scoring streak (15 games).
Leo Gibson: Named the MISL's Offensive Player of the Month in November, it was Gibson's move to the Comets' DEFENSIVE end on New Year's Eve that provided the club its much-needed spark in the back. Despite playing the first seven games on offense, Gibson still tied for the team lead in blocks with 20, which tied him for 6th overall in the league. Gibson was a tenacious defender, but he was often able to find the back of the net for the Comets, finishing 8th in the league in scoring with 45 points and finishing tied for the second most 3-point goals with four.
Jamar Beasley: Signed just one day before the Comets' season-opener, Beasley was an offensive force all season-long for the team. He finished 3rd in the league in scoring with 54 points and tied for 3rd in total goals with 20. Beasley also had the second most game-winning goals on the year with three.
The Comets' improbable playoff run ended Sunday in Milwaukee, losing the final two games of the series to the Wave at U.S. Cellular Center by scores of 20-18, then 5-2. The two losses ended a Comets season that saw the team start with a 1-6 record, then 4-11 after a February 6th loss in Chicago that dropped them into last place in the MISL standings. The Comets closed out the regular season on a tear by winning four out of their last five games to earn a spot in the playoffs. After defeating the Wave 11-5 in Game One of the playoff series last Wednesday night at the Independence Events Center, all the pressure was on the Milwaukee to win both matches Sunday, which they did.
