Comeback Falls Short as Grizzlies Drop Slugfest

July 30, 2022 - Frontier League (FL)
Gateway Grizzlies News Release

The Gateway Grizzlies almost came back from a pair of double-digit deficits on Friday night against the New York Boulders, but fell just short of the historic feat in 17-13 loss at GCS Credit Union Ballpark in the first game between the two franchises in Frontier League play.

The Boulders went to work quickly against newly acquired Gateway starter Anderson DeLeon (0-1) taking a 2-0 lead on a home run by Austin Dennis in the top of the first inning. New York then exploded in the top of the second inning by scoring six runs thanks to three more home runs to build their lead to 8-0.

Clint Freeman got the Grizzlies on the board in the bottom half by hitting a two-run home run, his third in as many games and fourth in his last five contests, making the score 8-2. But the Boulders kept on battering the Gateway pitching staff, scoring two runs in both the third and fourth innings, hitting two more homers in the process, to make the score 12-2.

In the fourth, Isaac Benard and Zach Racusin hit back-to-back solo home runs which made it a 12-4 ballgame at the time. After the Boulders got a run back in the top of the sixth, the Grizzlies went back to work offensively by scoring three runs in the bottom half, highlighted by Benard's second solo home run of the game, making the score 13-7. The Boulders then scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning in response, bringing their home run total to eight for the game with two more shots off Jared Milch, and their lead to 17-7.

It turned out they would need all of those runs, as the Grizzlies exploded for six runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by RBI hits by Benard, Kevin Krause, Trevor Achenbach, and Freeman to bring the Grizzlies within 17-13. In the ninth, they got a pair of baserunners to put the tying run on deck, but could not complete the rally in falling to the Boulders in the series opener.

The Grizzlies will look to bounce back as they continue their series against the Boulders Saturday night, July 30 at 6:45 p.m. at GCS Credit Union Ballpark with Manuel Rodriguez making the start on the mound for Gateway against Justin Alintoff for New York.
