Columbus Signs Defenseman Mathieu Roy

Syracuse, NY (July 14, 2009) - The Syracuse Crunch announced today that the Columbus Blue Jackets have signed defenseman Mathieu Roy to a one year, two-way NHL-American Hockey League contract. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Roy, 25, appeared in 59 games with Springfield last season, collecting two goals, 17 assists and 120 penalty minutes. Roy has spent the past six seasons as a member of the Edmonton Oilers organization, appearing in 270 combined games during that span with Edmonton's AHL affiliates in Toronto (Roadrunners), Edmonton (Roadrunners), Hamilton and Springfield, recording 16 goals, 75 assists and 390 penalty minutes.
Roy made his NHL debut on February 12, 2006 vs. St. Louis while with Edmonton. In all, Roy has skated in 30 NHL games, all with the Oilers, and collected two goals, one assist and 57 penalty minutes.
Prior to turning pro, Roy appeared in 183 games with Val d'Or (QMJHL) from 1999-2003, tallying 19 goals, 58 assists and 393 penalty minutes.
A native of St. Georges, Quebec, Roy was drafted by Edmonton in the seventh round, 215th overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
