Columbus Riverdragons Announce Summer Hoops Camp

COLUMBUS, Ga., (April 28) - The Columbus Riverdragons will team up with basketball coaches from several Columbus-area high schools to host the first annual Columbus Riverdragons Summer Hoops Camp July 8-11 at Northside High School in North Columbus.

Directed by Riverdragons head coach and 13-year NBA veteran Jeff Malone, the Riverdragons Summer Hoops Camp will develop both individual skills and team concepts, culminating in a tournament the camp's final day.

Open to boys and girls ages 8-16, the camp runs Tuesday, July 8 - Friday, July 11 inside Northside High School's brand new gymnasium. The Northside High School gym is equipped with three courts, six hoops and a state-of-the-art ventilation system designed to keep campers cool.

The morning session is for campers ages 8-12 and will run 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. The afternoon session is for campers ages 13-16 and will run 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.

The first 30 campers to register receive a free glow-in-the-dark Spalding Lightning basketball. All campers receive an official camp t-shirt, a certificate of participation and four tickets to a Riverdragons game. Tuition for the four-day camp is $85.

In addition to Coach Malone, camp staff expected to participate include Riverdragons assistant coach Rob Werdann and point guard Sean Peterson as well as coaches from several local area programs.

The Riverdragons office hours are 9 a.m. - 5 p.m, Monday - Friday.

Columbus Riverdragons Summer Hoops Camp Staff:

Jeff Malone: Riverdragons head coach is a two-time NBA All-Star and considered one of the top up-and-coming coaches in the pro game today. Malone reached his first NBDL coaching milestone March 7, 2003 collecting his 50th victory as the Riverdragons head coach in Columbus' 85-83 triumph over N. Charleston. Over his 13 seasons in the NBA, Malone averaged 19.0 points on his way to scoring 17,231 career points. Malone played four seasons at Mississippi State (1979-83) where he still reigns as the school's all-time leading scorer with 2,142 points.

Rob Werdann: The Riverdragons assistant coach since the team's inaugural season, Werdann earned his first "W" as a head coach in an 85-73 Columbus win over Roanoke last February. Werdann stepped in that evening for Malone, who was unable to attend the game due to food poisoning. Werdann also reigns as the all-time leader in blocked shots at St. John's University and played three seasons in the NBA with New Jersey and Denver. The former Net and Nugget also has extensive experience running summer camp programs for the NBA's New Orleans Hornets.

Sean Peterson: Rookie point guard from Georgia Southern posted first NBDL double-double on final day of 2002-03 regular season tallying 19 points and 11 assists. Peterson started in all 58 games over his two seasons at GSU, averaging 15.2 points, 6.4 assists and 2.1 steals. Peterson finished his collegiate career at GSU ranked fifth all-time in assists (373) and seventh all-time in steals (124). As a senior, Peterson averaged 16.9 points to lead team in scoring and rank fifth in the conference. Also that year, Peterson set a school record posting a career-high 17 assists against Western Carolina.

Local Area Coaches: Head and assistant basketball coaches from several Columbus-area programs - including those from camp site host Northside High School - will serve on the Riverdragons Summer Hoops Camp Staff.
