Columbus Riverdragons News Release

GREENVILLE, S.C., January 20 – The Columbus Riverdragons of the National Basketball Development League have claimed center Nick Sheppard and released center Marc Mazur, according to an announcement today by NBDL director of basketball operations Chris Alpert and Riverdragons head coach Jeff Malone.

Sheppard, a 6-11, 270-pound product of Pepperdine ('00), comes to Columbus after appearing in eight games with the Huntsville Flight earlier this season. With Huntsville, Sheppard averaged 17.6 minutes, 5.9 points, and 5.9 rebounds, while shooting 39% from the floor prior to his release on January 12. A two-year veteran of the D-League, Sheppard spent the 2001-02 season with the Mobile Revelers. Originally a second round pick (15th overall) by the Revelers in the 2001 NBDL Draft, he appeared in 55 games that season and averaged 5.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. Sheppard began his professional playing career with the Cincinnati Stuff of the International Basketball League (IBL) during the 2000-01 season.

Sheppard finished his college career at Pepperdine after transferring from Louisiana State following his sophomore season in 1997. As a senior with the Waves, he averaged 9.1 points and 6.7 rebounds to earn an honorable mention All-West Coast Conference selection and help propel Pepperdine to the second round of the 2000 NCAA Tournament.

Mazur, a 6-10, 264-pound product of Detroit ('02), appeared in 10 games for Columbus and averaged 14.7 minutes, 3.4 points, and 3.2 rebounds per game. A two-year veteran of the D-League, Mazur played for the Fayetteville Patriots last season. He played in 50 games (two starts) for the Patriots, averaging 13.3 minutes, 2.3 points and 2.8 rebounds.

Sheppard is expected to be in uniform when Columbus (5-15) travels to Roanoke (11-7) Friday for a matchup with the Dazzle at the Roanoke Civic Center. He will wear jersey #52.

The NBDL, the NBA's minor league, includes the Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), Charleston Lowgators (S.C.), Huntsville Flight (Ala.), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.), Columbus Riverdragons (Ga.), and the Asheville Altitude (N.C.).

Designed to help grow the sport of basketball both domestically and internationally, the NBDL serves as a source of on-court talent for the NBA's 30 teams and as a diverse human resources pool for the NBA and its teams by training employees in management, operations, public relations, sales and marketing positions.
