Columbus' Matt Gingera Named Easton Player of the Week

HUNTERSVILLE, NC - The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) today announced Matt Gingera of the Columbus Cottonmouths is the Easton Player of the Week for February 24-March 2.

Gingera scored a record-tying five goals in one game and added two assists in leading the Cottonmouths to a 3-0 record for the week.

Gingera kicked the week off on Thursday by assisting on the Cottonmouths' final goal in a 5-3 win over the Mississippi Surge. On Friday, the Winnipeg, Manitoba native etched his name in the record books by scoring five goals in Columbus' 6-5 overtime win against the Surge. Gingera scored once in the first period, twice in the second and once in the third before netting the overtime game-winner, joining Chris Wilson, Rob Sich and Steve Roberts as the only SPHL players to score five goals in a single game. Gingera then added an assist in a 3-0 shutout of the Mississippi RiverKings on Saturday.

Gingera, who currently ranks second in the SPHL with 27 goals and is tied for fourth with 46 points, captured Rookie of the Year honors last season as he led all rookies in points (50), while his 28 goals and nine game-winning goals were both second-most among all SPHL players. Gingera played his collegiate hockey at Sacred Heart University (CT) where he led the Pioneers in scoring his senior season, earning 2011-12 Third-Team All Conference honors.
