Columbus Destroyers game notes

May 8, 2006 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Columbus Destroyers News Release

QUICK FACTS:
Columbus Destroyers (8-7) at
San Jose Sabercats (9-6)
Date: Saturday, May 13, 2006
Kickoff: 10:30 p.m. (ET)
Site: HP Pavilion at San Jose (14,041)
Officials: Pat Garvey (Referee), Paul King (Umpire), Mike McCabe (Head Linesman), Wayne Mackie (Line Judge), Dino Paganelli (Back Judge)
Radio: Columbus' flagship station, WAZU-107.1 FM "The Big Wazoo," will broadcast the game live with Marty Bannister (play-by-play) and Rob Blackman (color) on the call from HP Pavilion at San Jose.
Television: The game will broadcast tape-delayed on Time Warner Ch. 24 Sunday at 7 p.m.
Series Record: The Destroyers and SaberCats have not met since the Destroyers moved to Columbus in 2004. Columbus will hope to accomplish a feat that Buffalo could not overcome, and defeat the SaberCats.
Series Streaks: Columbus has yet to beat San Jose in the five meetings between the two teams. San Jose defeated the Buffalo Destroyers five straight times from 1999-2003. Tonight's meeting is the first between the Columbus Destroyers and San Jose SaberCats.
Coaches: Columbus, Doug Kay, first season in Columbus, fourth overall (8-7, 23-32 overall).
San Jose, Darren Arbet, eighth season (9-6, 91-42 overall).

OVERVIEW: What a better way to end the season than have a playoff berth on the line for one team, and home-field advantage on the line for the other?

The Destroyers will be fighting for their first playoff berth since the team moved to Columbus in 2004. San Jose has locked up a playoff spot, won its division and has a first-round bye in the playoffs. They, however, are in the running for home field advantage throughout the American Conference playoff race. San Jose would need a win plus a Colorado loss to secure home field.

The game could mean very little to both teams by kickoff. If Colorado wins, San Jose will not be able to move up or down in the playoff picture. If Philadelphia beats Georgia, then Columbus will have clinched a playoff berth, but the Destroyers will be competing for which seed they could get. One way or another, this game will be packed with playoff excitement.

A COLUMBUS WIN OVER SAN JOSE WOULD...

- Give the Destroyers a 9-7 record on the season
- Add to the franchise record (9) for wins in a season
- Set a new franchise record (5) for road wins in a season
- Give the Destroyers a 1-5 record against the SaberCats
- Give the Destroyers their first playoff berth since the team moved to Columbus in 2004

DESTROYERS Last Week
Tampa Bay Storm 48
Columbus Destroyers 51
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Columbus defensive specialist Cecil Doggette was named the Defensive Player of the Game in the final regular season home game of his 12-season career as the Columbus Destroyers defeated the Tampa Bay Storm 51-48 in front of a season-high, 14,537 fans on Huntington Field at Nationwide Arena. The win brings the Destroyers within one game of reaching the postseason for the first time since moving to Columbus.

After being honored for his illustrious career prior to the start of the game, Doggette proceeded to record 14.0 tackles (11UT-6AT), one interception and two pass breakups. QB John Kaleo was named Offensive Player of the Game for his 14-of-23 passing for 226 yards and six touchdowns performance. Tampa Bay WR/DB Freddie Solomon was named Ironman of the Game after finishing the night with 14 receptions for 160 yards and two touchdowns and one tackle.

Kaleo's numbers in the first quarter were flawless as he completed six-of-six passes for 106 yards, to three different receivers with a touchdown and the defense added two interceptions to help build a 20-7 lead. Kaleo opened the scoring-fest with a 29-yard touchdown pass to offensive specialist Carl Bond. Then, on Tampa Bay's first offensive play, wide receiver/defensive back B.J. Barre reeled in an interception that placed the Destroyer's offense on Tampa Bay's 15-yard line.

The very next play, Kaleo found wide receiver/linebacker David Saunders in the back of the end zone for and early 14-0 lead. Following a Tampa Bay touchdown, wide receiver/defensive back Marcus Knight turned a 5-yard pass into a 40-yard touchdown reception.

Kicker Mark Lewis' streak of 38 consecutive extra points came to an end when he missed on the final touchdown of the quarter. A Saunders interception, which was returned to the one-yard line, was the exclamation mark for the Destroyer's dominant first quarter.

Shortly into the second quarter, fullback/linebacker Leroy Thompson added to Columbus' lead when he scored on a 1-yard touchdown plunge. Bond and Kaleo hooked up for a 28-yard touchdown pass to make it 34-14.

Halfway through the third quarter, Kaleo completed an 11-yard touchdown pass to Knight for Columbus' lone touchdown of the quarter. Lewis converted a 19-yard field goal, shortly after Doggette's interception, with just over a minute left in the game, giving the Destroyers a final score of 51-48.
THIS WEEK's OPPONENT

The San Jose SaberCats have made their name known since the team was awarded a franchise on Oct. 26, 1994. The team began play in the 1995 season along with St. Louis, Memphis, Hartford and Des Moines.

The team was initially coached by Todd Shell, who finished 8-4 with a divisional crown in the teams' inaugural season.

Current head coach Darren Arbet was named the SaberCats' head man on Jan. 13, 1999 and since then has guided the team to two ArenaBowl titles.

The club won its first title on Aug. 18, 2002 in ArenaBowl XVI. San Jose defeated Arizona 52-14 in front of 16,942 fans at the Compaq Center.

San Jose took claim to the ArenaBowl XVIII with a 69-62 defeat of Arizona, this time knocking off the Rattlers in their home arena, America West Arena. A crowd of 17,391 saw the San Jose win on June 27, 2004. It was the second championship in three years for the team.

LAST MEETING WITH SAN JOSE

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Buffalo Destroyers and San Jose SaberCats met for the final time on Mar. 14, 2003, as the Destroyers moved to Columbus for the 2004 season and the teams have not met since. Tonight's game will mark the first meeting between the teams since then.

In the 2003 meeting, the SaberCats handed the Destroyers a 58-41 defeat in front of 13,047 fans at the HP Pavilion.

San Jose jumped out early and led from the 8:38 mark of the first quarter on to claim their 16th consecutive home victory. James Roe led the SaberCats with five touchdown receptions, which tied the franchise record.

Buffalo cut the lead to 39-28 with 11:20 to go in the third quarter, but that would be as close as they would get. Jarrail Jackson started the scoring for the Destroyers in the second half with a 55-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to cut the San Jose lead to 39-21.

Less than two minutes later, JoJo Polk intercepted a pass and returned it 20-yards for a score to bring Buffalo within 11 points of tying the game. Roe then gave San Jose the cushion it needed with a 4-yard touchdown grab on the ensuing possession.

The Destroyers had started the season off winning three of their first four games, but fell for the third straight game to fall to 3-4 on the season.

DESTROYERS NOTABLES

DROP BACK
The Columbus Destroyers moved within a win of a playoff spot with a 51-48 victory over the Tampa Bay Storm in front of a season-high 14,357 fans on Huntington Field at Nationwide Arena on Saturday night. The win improved the Destroyers to 8-7 on the season, guaranteeing them a finish of .500 or better for the first time in franchise history. Defensive specialist Cecil Doggette went out and recorded a Destroyers' single-game record 14.0 tackles (11UT-6AT), two pass breakups, as well as a key fourth quarter interception. He was named ADT Defensive Player of the Game for his performance. Offensive specialist Carl Bond caught three touchdown passes in the win.

FORWARD MOTION
The Destroyers will either be preparing for the playoffs or preparing for the off-season. The playoff picture still has two spots open and three teams fighting to get in. Three of the six seeds are spoken for, as Dallas (No. 1), Orlando (No. 2) and New York (No. 3) have all locked up the top three positions. Austin has clinched a playoff berth, but could finish ranked fourth or fifth. Columbus, Georgia and Philadelphia are fighting for the final two spots. The playoffs begin the weekend of May 19-21 with the Wild Card Round. The third seed will host the sixth seed and the fourth seed will host the fifth seed.

HEAD COACHES
DOUG KAY: The Destroyers hired Doug Kay as head coach on July 14, 2005. Kay is in his first season in Columbus and brings 12 years of Arena Football coaching experience. In 10 of his 12 seasons, Kay's teams have qualified for the playoffs, including two ArenaBowl championships. Kay also has coached the Charlotte Rage (1995) and the Carolina Cobras (2000-01). Through 15 games of the 2006 season, Kay has guided the Destroyers to an 8-7 record.

DARREN ARBET: A two-time Coach of the Year and one of the winningest coaches in Arena Football League history, Darren Arbet is in his eighth season as the head coach of the San Jose SaberCats. At the start of the 2006 season, he took on the role of General Manager. Arbet guided the SaberCats to their sixth consecutive winning season and their sixth straight playoff appearance in 2005 and won his 80th career game in the process, becoming just the seventh head coach in League history to reach that mark.
PLAYOFFS?!? YES, WE ARE TALKING PLAYOFFS
The Columbus Destroyers are on the verge of clinching their first playoff berth since the club moved to Columbus in 2004. The team can lock up a playoff berth with a win OR a Philadelphia loss. Philadelphia travels to take on Georgia, who also is fighting for its playoff life, Saturday at 7:30 p.m. To make things even more interesting, the Destroyers even have an opportunity for a home playoff game. Should Philadelphia defeat Georgia AND Orlando defeat Austin coupled with a Destroyers win, then Columbus would notch the fourth seed and host a Wild Card Round home playoff game. If the Destroyers qualify for the playoffs, it will mark the third time in franchise history, as the 2000 and 2002 Buffalo Destroyers accomplished the feat. The Destroyers have yet to win a playoff game.

FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING
This past weekend's 51-48 victory over the Tampa Bay Storm was the first Destroyers' victory over the Storm in franchise history. Tampa Bay had won the previous four meetings. Head coach Doug Kay also earned his first victory over Tampa Bay coach Tim Marcum. Kay was the defensive coordinator, and Marcum the head coach, of the ArenaBowl VII champion Tampa Bay Storm in 1993. Kay and Marcum have faced each other five times as opposing head coaches. Another first for the Destroyers this season came against the Austin Wranglers and Colorado Crush. Entering the 2006 season, the Destroyers had not defeated either of those teams. The club went on to beat both of those teams on the road. Another opponent the Destroyers have not defeated in franchise history is this weekend's opponent, the San Jose SaberCats.

KALEO VS. SAN JOSE
For the third time this season, Destroyers' quarterback John Kaleo will take on his former team. In each instance this season, Kaleo has quarterbacked the Destroyers to victory. He did so against the Austin Wranglers, a team he played for in 2004, as well as the Tampa Bay Storm, where he spent the 2000-03 seasons. This weekend will mark the third straight week that Kaleo has faced his former team, this time the San Jose SaberCats. Kaleo joined the SaberCats midway through the 1997 season and played in seven games. He completed 115-of-215 passes for 1,385 yards and 20 touchdowns, while adding four rushing touchdowns, as well. Kaleo has faced off against the SaberCats five times in his career and sports a 3-2 record against the club, including two wins last season as a member of the Los Angeles Avengers.

KINNEY ALSO A FORMER CAT
Offensive/defensive lineman Kelvin Kinney also has played for the SaberCats. Kinney's Arena Football League career began in 2000 with San Jose. He played in four games and recorded 5.0 tackles (2UT-6AT), a tackle for a loss, and a forced fumble. Kinney also has played for Detroit and Tampa Bay in his six-plus year career.
PLAYOFF RACE HITS FINAL STRETCH
With two games remaining in the 2006 season, the final games of the season will impact the playoff picture more so each week, especially in the National Conference. Two of the nine teams have identical 8-6 records and three others are tied with records of 7-7. The two division winners receive a first-round bye with the third seed hosting the sixth seed and the fourth seed hosting the fifth seed in the Wild Card Round. If the playoffs were to start today, the Destroyers would miss the playoffs by one game. Below is the National Conference playoff picture through Week 12. The "z" indicates if the team has clinched a playoff spot and home field throughout the National Conference playoffs. The "y" indicates the team has clinched the division. The "x" indicates that a team has clinched a playoff berth.

SOME MIGHT SAY 11 IS HEAVEN
Destroyers' wide receiver/linebacker David Saunders cannot be kept out of the end zone. It's practically impossible, these days. In his past 11 consecutive games, Saunders has caught at least one touchdown pass. In this past Saturday's win over his former team, Tampa Bay, Saunders caught four passes for 54 yards and one touchdown. He added 2.0 tackles (2UT) on defense. Saunders has jumped to the top of the receiving chart, leading the team in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. For the season, Saunders has 72 receptions for 793 yards and 17 touchdowns. Defensively, Saunders has added 20 tackles (14UT-12AT), three pass breakups and three fumble recoveries. He has been named Defensive Player of the Game twice.

TALK ABOUT A CLOSE "ONE"
In the game of Arena Football, a lot of times, games are decided by a narrow margin. For the first 10 games of the season, the Destroyers had not had a game decided by 10 points or less. The past five games have been the exact opposite, including this past weekend's win over Tampa Bay. The 51-48 victory did not come until the final seconds of the game, when the Destroyers recovered an onside kick with 15 seconds remaining in the game. The Destroyers are 2-1 in games decided by three points or less.
OFFENSE RETURNS TO FORM
The Destroyers' offense has kind of flown under the radar this season, as the talk has primarily been focused on the club's defense, which ranks tops in the Arena Football League. This past weekend, the offense had one of its best outings this season. Quarterback John Kaleo was firing on all cylinders in the first half, completing 8-of-9 passes for 150 yards and five touchdowns. He finished the day completing 14-of-23 for 226 yards and six touchdowns, which ties his season best. Kaleo completed passes to four different receivers and touchdowns to three of them. Offensive specialist Carl Bond led the team with six receptions for 102 yards and three scores. Wide receiver/linebacker David Saunders caught a touchdown pass for the 11th straight game, and wide receiver/defensive back Marcus Knight had two touchdown grabs, as well.

CLOSING IN ON THE RECORD
As the Destroyers are set to close out the 2006 regular season, different players are closing in on or have set a Destroyers single-season or career record. John Kaleo has set new passing records. He broke the record for passes attempted and completed in a season this past weekend when he completed his 296th and attempted his 490th pass of the year, breaking the old marks of 484 attempts and 295 completions set by Jim Kubiak in 2001. Kaleo is on pace to attempt 523 passes, which would break the career record of 522 set by Ryan Vena (2004-05). Kaleo also is on pace to complete 316 passes, which would be 10 shy of the career mark set by Vena. Kaleo needs 307 yards and eight touchdown passes against the San Jose SaberCats to tie the single-season marks set by Kubiak in 2001.

Flipping to the defensive side of the ball, fumbles forced and fumbles recovered is a popular record that has fell or is falling this season. Brandon Hefflin forced three fumbles in 2005, only to have that mark tied this season by Ken Jones and B.J. Barre. The record is not that safe, however. Kelvin Kinney has two forced fumbles to his credit. If that record isn't jumbled enough, fumbles recovered is even more jumbled. Hefflin and Chris Pope recovered two fumbles in 2005, and five players have recovered two fumbles this season, but Hefflin broke the record and now has four to his name.

The record for sacks in a season is 5.5, set by Kerwin Hairston in 2001. Kinney and Jones are both hot on the trail of Hairston. Jones currently has 5.0 sacks while Kinney has 3.5. Jerald Brown set the interception record for the season, but also has broken the interception return yards record with 133 return yards this season.

FAMILIAR FACES

DESTROYERS TACKLE HUNGER
When the Columbus Destroyers kicked off the 2005 AFL season, the team also kicked off a new community initiative in conjunction with the Mid-Ohio FoodBank to "Tackle Hunger" in Central Ohio. Continuing in 2006, fans are asked to bring non-perishable food items to each home game at Nationwide Arena for donation to the Mid-Ohio FoodBank. In turn, fans will receive one raffle ticket per donated food item for a chance to win a team-autographed, authentic AFL football. One winner will be announced during the fourth quarter of each game.
