DESTROYERS Last Week:
Columbus Destroyers 27
Nashville Kats 53
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Kats limited the Columbus Destroyers to seven first half points en route to a 53-27 in front of 10,941 fans at the Gaylord Entertainment Center Friday night.

ADT Defensive Player of the Game and Kats defensive specialist Monty Montgomery led the game with five tackles, five pass breakups to lead the Kats defense, who intercepted two Kaleo passes and broke up 12 more.

Both teams had opportunities in the first quarter. After forcing the Kats into a long field goal attempt, the Destroyers took over at the Kats 8-yard line. Kats quarterback Clint Stoerner botched the snap of the field goal and was sacked by Mike Sutton and Chris Janek.

On the very next play, Destroyers rookie fullback/linebacker Harold Wells rushed to the right side and fumbled. The ball was recovered by the Kats, who scored on the very next play. Stoerner found T.T. Toliver for the 44-yard score.

The Destroyers got on the board with 11:14 to go in the first half when Kaleo found wide receiver/linebacker David Saunders for an 18-yard hookup in the end zone to cut the lead to 10-7.

It appeared to start off great for the Destroyers in the second half as they pinned the Kats on their own 1-yard line, but the Kats marched down the field and scored on fullback/linebacker Frank Carter's 1-yard run.

On the final play of the third quarter, the Destroyers struck on a fourth down play when Kaleo escaped some pressure and found wide receiver/defensive back Ira Gooch in the back of the end zone to pull the Destroyers to with 33-14.

Kaleo finished the night completing 17-of-40 passes for 159 yards and three scores. Offensive specialist Thaibit Davis caught six passes for 77 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver/linebacker David Saunders had six receptions for 52 yards and a pair of touchdown grabs.

Stoerner took home Offensive Player of the Game honors after he completed 18-of-28 passes for 237 yards and five touchdowns. He did not throw an interception. Bonner was named Ironman of the Game as he had five receptions for 51 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while adding three tackles (all solo) and a pass breakup on defense.

THIS WEEK's OPPONENT:
The Dallas Desperados entered the League in 2002 and played their first game on April 20. They opened their inaugural season with a 57-44 victory over the Carolina Cobras in Raleigh, N.C.
In three seasons of play, the Desperados have accumulated a 21-24-1 record and with a 2-0 start to the 2006 season, the Desperados are one game away from reaching the .500 mark in their franchise history.
Dallas started its season off with victories over both of the expansion teams. In Week 1 playing host to the Kansas City Brigade, the Desperados grabbed an early lead that they would not relinquish en route to a 58-44 season opening victory.
The very next week, on the road against Utah, the Desperados held off a late Blaze rally to win 56-53 in the Blaze's first home game in team history.
The Desperados are led by head coach Will McClay, who is in his second season. McClay came up one game short of coaching the Desperados to their third playoff berth.
Under center for the Desperados this season is Clint Dolezel, who is in his 11th season in the League. He joined the Desperados from Las Vegas after Clint Stoerner departed for Nashville.
LAST MEETING WITH DALLAS:
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Columbus Destroyers and Dallas Desperados were in a neck and neck battle through one half of football as the teams entered the locker room at the half tied at 27-27.
But it was a tale of two halves as the Desperados shut out the Destroyers 21-0 in the third quarter to take a 48-27 lead entering the final frame on their way to a 55-33 victory in front of 13,757 fans at Nationwide Arena.
Dallas quarterback Clint Stoerner completed 21-of-28 passes for 239 yards and four touchdowns to take home Offensive Player of the Game honors. Bobby Sippio was named Ironman of the Game honors for the Desperados after he caught four passes for 64 yards and a touchdowns as well as adding an interception on defense. Earning ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors was Hamin Milligan, who also had an interception.

DESTROYERS NOTABLES:

DROP BACK
The Columbus Destroyers hit a road block in their first road game of the season when they took on the Nashville Kats, as they fell 53-27 in front of 10,941 fans at the Gaylord Entertainment Center. The score was 10-7 with 11 minutes, 40 seconds to go in the first half before the Kats went on a tear, scoring the game's next 23 points to take a 33-7 lead. The Destroyers were never able to recover. Offensive specialist Thabiti Davis caught six passes for 77 yards and a score, while wide receiver/linebacker David Saunders caught six passes for 52 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.

FORWARD MOTION
The Destroyers will try their luck on the road next Sunday when they travel to take on the expansion Kansas City Brigade. The Brigade have opened their inaugural season with back-to-back losses on the road, but by very narrow margins. The Brigade will host their first home game in franchise history this weekend when they play host to the Austin Wranglers Sunday at 2 p.m.

HEAD COACHES
DOUG KAY: The Columbus Destroyers hired Doug Kay to take over the role of head coach on July 14, 2005. Kay is in his first season in Columbus and brings 12 years of Arena Football coaching experience. In 10 of his 12 seasons, Kay's teams have qualified for the playoffs, including two ArenaBowl championships. Kay is guiding his third team. He coached the Charlotte Rage in 1995 and the Carolina Cobras in 2000 and 2001.

WILL McCLAY: In his second season as the Desperados head man, McClay has gotten the 2006 Desperados off to a fast start, winning the first two games of the season. McClay is coming off a 2005 season in which he just missed guiding the Desperados to the playoffs, as he finished the season with a 8-7-1 mark. McClay joined the Desperados in 2002 as the first defensive coordinator in team history, which he helped the team two back-to-back playoff appearances in their first two seasons. McClay also has worked with the Dallas Cowboys scouting department as well as holding jobs with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Orlando Rage (XFL), Grand Rapids Rampage, Anaheim Piranhas, Milwaukee Mustangs, Florida Bobcats and Detroit Drive. McClay played for the Drive during the 1989-92 seasons and has won three ArenaBowl titles as a player.

ALL CAUGHT UP
Offensive Specialist Thabiti Davis continues to do what he does best - catch passes. On the season, Davis has caught 16 passes for 208 yards and four touchdowns. Davis ranks fifth in the Arena Football League in receiving yards and is tied for seventh in touchdown receptions. Hauling in passes is nothing new to Davis, who has caught 69, 127 and 113 passes in the 2003, 2004 and 2005 seasons, respectively. Davis is on pace to grab a career-high 128 passes this season.

DOG POUND HITS 500
In two weeks, Destroyers defensive specialist Cecil Doggette has proven why he is one of the Arena Football League's best defensive specialists in the 20-year history of the League. In the first two games of the season, Doggette has led the team in tackles, has an interception to his name and a pass deflection (to which he is the AFL's all-time leader in that category). Doggette's 10 total tackles ranks him 22nd in the League. For his career, Doggette has played in 107 games, recorded 425 solo tackles, 151 assisted tackles for a total of 500.5 tackles, which ranks him fifth best all-time.

SACK ATTACK
The Destroyers offensive/defensive linemen have been doing their job on both sides of the ball. The linemen are getting to opposing quarterbacks, but more importantly, they haven't allowed other teams to get to the Destroyers quarterbacks. The Destroyers have two sacks and the linemen have broken up eight passes. The Destroyers quarterback tandem of John Kaleo and Billy Dicken have yet to be sacked on the season, giving the linemen a plus-2 in sacks by/sacks against ratio. The plus-2 is good enough for fifth best in the League. Nashville leads the pack with a plus-6 margin.

SPEAKING OF DEFENSE
The Destroyers defense has been stingy on opponents so far this season. In two games, the Destroyers have held opponents to an average of 41.5 points per game, good enough for fifth best in the AFL. Nashville is the only team that is holding opponents under 30 points a game with an average of 27.5. Chicago is pulling up the rear, allowing a League-worst 58.0 points per game.

SPLITTING THE UPRIGHTS
Nothing like the last minute. Right before the Destroyers took to the field to start the 2006 season, the team acquired kicker Mark Lewis from the Las Vegas Gladiators. The move has been more than worth it, as Lewis has yet to miss an extra point and is 3-for-6 on field goals. Lewis is 9-of-9 on extra points this season. Last season with the Gladiators, Lewis connected on 87-of-106 (82.1 percent) extra points and drilled 7-of-13 field goals. He ranks sixth in the League in field goal percentage and is tied for first in field goal percentage. Lewis has made 15 straight extra points dating back to last season.
THE NEED FOR HD SPEED
Earlier this week, the Destroyers acquired offensive specialist Henry Douglas from the Chicago Rush in exchange for wide receiver/defensive back (and sometimes defensive specialist) Jeremy Unertl. The trade was a perfect fit for both teams. Chicago, who is allowing a League worst 58.0 points per game needed help in the secondary. The Destroyers added another weapon to their offense. Douglas, who is in his third Arena Football League season, was second on the Rush in receiving in 2005. He caught 87 passes for 1,019 yards and 17 touchdowns in 12 games. Douglas also is a return specialist as he was the Rush's primary return man for the 2005 season. He returned 57 kickoffs for 1,083 yards and two touchdowns as well as six missed field goals for 138 yards and a touchdown. The Destroyers have yet to return a kick for a touchdown this season, but have come close on a few occasions. They lead the League in kickoff return's with an average of 23.5 yards per return.

TOSS UP
Former Ohio State linebacker and current New England Patriots linebacker Mike Vrabel will be on hand tonight to do the Coin Toss. Vrabel, who has two Super Bowl rings on his fingers, has played nine seasons in the National Football League. Not only has Vrabel been a force on the defensive side of the ball, but even a threat on the offensive side, snagging a total of six touchdown passes in his career.

BACK HOME AGAIN
There's no place like home. At least that is the way it has been for the Destroyers in their eight year history. The Destroyers have not faired well on the road, as they have won 12 road games in team history. Home is much sweeter as the Destroyers are 20-33 in team history.

WHERE THEY RANK
The Destroyers rank in the Top 5 in a total of 18 statistical categories. They lead or are tied for the League lead in the following categories: Point After Touchdown Percentage, Kickoff Return Average and Sacks Against. The also rank towards the top of the League in: Scoring Defense (fifth), Total Defense (fifth), Pass Attempts (second), Field Goals Attempted (fourth), Kickoff Return Yards (third), Fumbles Recovered (second) and Third Down Conversions (fifth).

FAMALIAR FACE
When the Destroyers and Desperados take the field tonight, a familiar face will be on Huntington Field at Nationwide Arena. Last season with the Destroyers, wide receiver/linebacker Randall Lane played in nine games and had 20 receptions for 226 yards and five touchdowns. This past off-season, Lane signed with the Desperados, where he has yet to play in a game.

In turn, fans will receive one raffle ticket per donated food item for a chance to win a team-autographed, authentic AFL football.
