San Angelo, Texas --- The summer of 2012 will be remembered for the continuing high temperatures we're now used to, and for a late season run that fell a little short for the Colts.
For the sixth time in Doc Edwards's seven years as Manager, the Colts made the playoffs. Doc also won his 300th game with the club. San Angelo also reached a few other milestones in 2012; an offseason trade produced a pitcher who set a new single-season franchise save mark, fellow pitcher Brian Henschel added to his franchise-record win total, outfielder Cory Patton led the league in doubles and RBIs, and for the first time ever, a Colts' player was honored with a bobblehead doll.
In the stands our fans once again proved that San Angelo is a baseball town, leading the United League in attendance with a regular season total of 115,764 fans. These accomplishments would be impossible without the support of our local business community.
Closer Erik Draxton set the new single-season saves record on August 29 against the Fort Worth Cats. It was his 23rd save of the year, and it broke a Colts' record that had stood since 2002. Draxton also had one of the lowest earned-run averages on the team at 2.42. Brian Henschel's win total went up to 49 in six years as a Colt, and fellow starting pitcher Logan Williamson earned his 50th career win this season. Henschel also led the league in innings pitched (143) and complete games (5).
At the plate, San Angelo once again led the league in home runs. The Colts slugged 66 homers in 2012, and also led the United League in doubles (182) and RBIs (448). Third baseman Landon Camp paced San Angelo with 14 home runs. Meanwhile, Cory Patton led the league with 70 RBIs and 30 doubles. Other league leaders for the Colts included first baseman Daryl Jones and outfielders Jason Martin and J.J. Sherrill. Jones led the United League in runs scored with 77, Martin had a league-best 127 hits and Sherrill led the way with seven triples.
The Colts were blessed with a strong offseason of support from our local business partners. The promotion schedule was packed with three fireworks shows, two bobblehead giveaways (including one of fan-favorite Ronnie Gaines), t-shirt, replica jersey, ball cap, six-pack cooler, eye black, glow-in-the-dark logo balls, and thunder stick giveaways. We also held two very successful jersey auctions, raising more than $5,000 for local charities. Fiddlestring's sponsored Grand Slam Sundays, giving away a 47" smart television during each Sunday game, SportClips had haircuts on Mondays, Budweiser's $2 Tuesdays were even more successful than last year, and Sherwin Wednesdays and Miller Lite's $1 beer nights were also fan favorites.
A new sponsor, Basic Energy, stepped up big time, sponsoring the July 2 fireworks show and a cap giveaway night in August. New partner, Angelo Pellets supplied the team with top of the line Kubota equipment to keep the park looking great.
Support also came from the surrounding communities, as Community Night sales reached more than 15,000 tickets sold.
The Colts had a standout season with new sponsors both in and outside the park, continued growth in the stands, new groups holding outings, social media building even outside of San Angelo, as well as new promotions at Foster Field. Become part of the 2013 season, as the Colts' fan base continues to rise with the team adding new exciting promotions, giveaways, specialty nights, and great weekly promotions.
San Angelo's only professional sports team will continue to be an important part of the community by giving families a place to enjoy their summer evenings, donating to local charities and providing a fun, friendly, family-oriented environment.
