San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, Texas --- The Colts continued to trim down their roster this week in preparation for spring training, parting ways with two outfielders.
The Colts announced Monday they have traded J.J. Sherrill and Jamar Walton to the Newark Bears of the independent Can-Am League in exchange for future considerations. Both players spent all of last season in San Angelo.
Sherrill led the Colts, and was fourth in the United League, with a .345 batting average. He complemented his stellar average with three home runs and 27 RBIs in 70 games. The 32-year-old veteran also showed off his speed with a league-best seven triples and 22 steals. It was Sherrill's highest stolen base total since 2002, when he recorded 23 steals for the Class A Columbus Red Stixx of the South Atlantic League.
Now entering his 14th professional season, Sherrill was originally drafted by the Cleveland Indians in 1998. The switch hitter began his career in 1999, and went on to spend seven years in the Indians farm system. Sherrill reached as high as the Class Double-A Akron Aeros of the Eastern League in 2004 and 2005.
Sherrill has a career .268 batting average with 82 homers, 430 RBIs and 182 stolen bases in 853 games.
Walton hit .296 with two home runs and 43 RBIs in 82 games for San Angelo last year. The 27-year-old, left-handed hitter played all three outfield positions, but spent most of his time in left field (53 games).
Walton was a fourth-round draft pick by the Florida Marlins in 2004. He spent seven years in affiliated ball, playing in the Marlins, Kansas City Royals and Washington Nationals farm systems. Walton reached as high as the Class A-Advanced Wilmington Blue Rocks and Potomac Nationals in 2009 and 2010, respectively. Both teams are members of the Carolina League.
Now entering his 10th professional season, Walton has a career .260 average with 33 home runs and 260 RBIs in 583 games.
The Colts are a member of United League Baseball who will play their 14th season this year. For more information or to purchase season tickets, contact the Colts' front office at 94-COLTS.
