San Angelo Colts News Release
The Colts saw a six-run, seventh inning lead go by the wayside at Foster Field Monday night as Rio Grande came storming back in the late innings to win 12-11 in 10 innings. From the seventh inning on, the Colts were outscored 9-2 and saw a 9-3 lead evaporate while splitting their four-game set with the White Wings.
Rio Grande drew first blood in the second on an RBI single from third baseman Eric Gonzalez to take a 1-0 lead. The score would not last long however as the Colts plated seven runs in the second to take control of the game. San Angelo tied the game on an RBI single from third baseman Landon Camp, which brought in leftfielder Jason Crosland. San Angelo then took the lead on a single by shortstop Butch Ballez, which was bobbled by White Wings' leftfielder Kevin Dietrich. The error allowed Camp to score and give the Colts a 2-1 lead. Three batters later, centerfielder Ronnie Gaines smacked a single to center, driving in two runs and increasing the Colts lead to 4-1. First baseman Josh Collazo followed with an RBI single of his own before designated hitter Jason Landreth ended the rally with a two-run double to make the score 7-1.
The White Wings tried to get back in the game by scoring two runs in the fourth. Shortstop Yeurys Tejada (1) hit a solo homerun to lead off the inning, before Salvador Paniagua scored on a throwing error to draw Rio Grande to within four.
However, the Colts would get the two runs right back in the bottom-half on a two-run homer by Landreth (6) to push the Colts lead back to six at 9-3. The round-tripper was Landreth's third in as many nights and gave him 11 RBI for the series after going 0-5 with no RBI in the opener on Friday.
Rio Grande got back into the game in the seventh on a three-run shot by rightfielder Arlon Quiroz to cut the Colts advantage to 9-6. The homer chased starter Ezequiel Astacio from the game after going 6.1 innings and allowing five earned runs and striking out nine. The White Wings then took the lead by scoring five runs in the eighth. Centerfielder Javis Diaz knocked in two run to draw Rio Grande to within 9-8. Diaz would then tie the game on a Quiroz single, before taking the lead on a two-run double by first baseman Salvador Paniagua. When the inning finally ended it was 11-9 Rio Grande.
But the Colts came back with single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to tie things back up. Camp cut the deficit in half with another RBI single, which was followed by a dramatic solo homerun by Gaines with one out in the ninth to make the score 11-11.
But once again the Colts' bullpen struggled as Mike Hacker (0-1) suffered the loss by giving up the game-winning RBI single to Gonzalez, his second of the game. San Angelo got a runner aboard in the bottom of the tenth but nothing else as closer Anderson Garcia (2-1) picked up the win.
For the game, Quiroz went 3-6 with three runs and four RBI to pace the White Wings. Landreth led the Colts attack by going 4-6 with a homer, double and four RBI.
Despite receiving a no decision, the pitching star was Rio Grande reliever Miguel Matos, who entered the game in the second inning with the White Wings trailing 7-1, and proceeded to toss 5.2 innings while giving up six hits and two earned runs while striking out 10. When he left the game, the Colts lead had dwindled to 9-6.
The Colts will take the day off tomorrow before beginning a four-game series with the Coastal Bend Thunder on Wednesday at Foster Field. The game will feature Brian Henschel (1-2, 5.40 ERA) against a yet to be determined pitcher for the Thunder. Wednesday is also Family Night presented by High Sky as families will be allowed into the ballpark free of charge. Furthermore, Wednesday will also be Sure-Win Wednesday presented by Sherwin Williams. First pitch is at 7:05 and can be heard on 1260 KKSA. The Kemps Pregame Show precedes the game broadcast at 6:50.
