San Angelo Colts News Release

San Angelo, Texas--- The San Angelo Colts squandered a one-run lead in the top of the eighth inning to the Dillas on Sunday night at Foster Field as Amarillo took game three with a score of 4-3. The Colt loss sets San Angelo on the brink of elimination; Amarillo leads the series two games to one.

Keanon Simon, the Dillas leadoff hitter, began the contest with a single. Simon reached third base following an error and a groundout. The Colts defense stumbled again as Simon reached home plate after Colts shortstop Butch Ballez misplayed a routine ground ball from Terrance McClain. Amarillo struck first, taking a 1-0.

The score did not change until the top of the fourth. A blast over the left field wall by McClain added a run; it was the first earned run Colts starter Richard Salazar had allowed in ten consecutive innings since joining the Colts.

Dillas starter Ralph Roberts entered the sixth inning without allowing a hit. Ronnie Gaines, the first hitter of the inning, sent a line drive to left field for a single to break up the Colts hitless streak. Gaines was off the second pitch of the at-bat to Hunter Jobes. A drag bunt by Jobes resulted in a base knock; runners were at first and second base. Rich Paz was asked to sacrifice his at-bat with a bunt, the Colts second baseman did so, and runners moved to second and third base. A ground ball to second base from Bryan Frichter put San Angelo on the board as Gaines cruised home. With two outs in the frame, and Jobes at third base, Selwyn Langaigne sent a ground ball to third baseman Angel Reyes who bobbled the ball. Reyes error allowed Jobes to score; the game was knotted at two.

In the seventh, the Colts took the lead. A two out double by Ronnie Gaines to left-center, and a single for Hunter Jobes to right-center scored Gaines to give San Angelo it's first lead of the contest.

That edge would not last long as the road squad scored two in the top of the eighth. Willie James walked before Simon singled. With runners occupying first and second, Stantrel Smith grounded to third base; however, no outs were recorded on a fielders' choice as Simon beat the throw of Frichter on a slide. Carlos Figueroa singled to right to notch the game at three. Once two strikeouts were recorded by Jameson Maj, he threw a wild pitch to plate Simon. Amarillo held a 4-3 lead after seven-and-a-half innings and would not relinquish the advantage the rest of the night.
