(Loveland, CO) - The Colorado Ice won their season opener against the Amarillo Venom tonight with a final score of 37-26 starting the Ice off 1-0.
The first quarter was a defensive show by both teams with no points being put on the scoreboard. The Ice defense came out ready to play with a lot of big hits by the starting defensive players. James Johnson (24) had the first big hit of the game. Those hits didn't stop with Johnson though; Ice had two crucial tackles by Dominic Applehans (51), which were followed by Chase Vaughn (48) to wrap up the first quarter.
In the second quarter the Venoms Quarterback X'Zavier Bloodsaw (10) carried in the first score of the game and the PAT kick by Addison McCauley (4) was good. The Ice responded with a pitch by David Knighton (5) to T.J. Pitts (17). The PAT attempt by Rocky Stevens (26) was no good. It was the ice however that was able to get the next score on the board with a pass from Knighton (5) to Kenneth Witter (18). The 28-yard PAT was then ran in by Jason English (8). The Venom came back with a pass by Bloodsaw to Anthony Clark. The PAT by McCauley (4) was good, tying up the score 14-14 at half.
It was the Venom that came out on top in the third quarter with 12 points compared to the Ice 3 scored by Stevens (26).
The Fourth quarter was an all out battle between both hard working teams. It was in the last 4 remaining minutes that Bloodsaw (10) made his fatal pass straight to Ice number 8 Jason English. It was with that pass that the Colorado Ice was able to take control of the game. A huge touchdown pass by Knighton (5) was caught by Duane Brooks (2) in the last remaining minutes to take the lead by two touchdowns. The Ice came out and showed that hard work does pay off.
