Colorado 14ers News Release
DENVER - January 22, 2009 - The Colorado 14ers led wire-to-wire in taking a121-116 victory over the Bakersfield Jam at the Broomfield Event Center Thursday night. Colorado has now won five of its last six games to improve to 13-6 on the season, while Bakersfield falls to 15-8 with the loss.
All eight players available scored for Colorado on the night, led by Josh Davis' 25 point effort. Billy Thomas added 22, and Eddie Gill posted his fourth straight double-double with 14 points and 11 assists. But the key to the Colorado victory was forcing 21 Jam turnovers, leading to 95 field goal attempts compared to 75 for Bakersfield.
"Our goal is to get between 92 and 105 shots, and I feel when we do that we will win," said 14ers head coach Bob MacKinnon. "But in order to do that you have to defend and you have to get on the offensive glass, so those were the things we really emphasized."
The 14ers pulled down 17 offensive rebounds and out-boarded the Jam 42-36 on the night. Dominique Coleman led the glass cleaning effort with 12 rebounds to go along with his 12 points and four assists.
Despite never leading, Bakersfield kept the game close throughout behind the shooting of Derrick Byars and Nick Lewis. Byars posted a game-high 33 points while Lewis went 9-11 from the field en route to a 26 point night to go along with his 11 rebounds.
The Jam will return home to take on the Erie Bayhawks on Saturday afternoon at Rabobank Arena. The 14ers now travel to Boise to take on the Idaho Stampede at Qwest Arena tomorrow night.
