January 8, 2004 - National Women's Basketball League (NWBL)
Colorado Chill News Release
The Colorado Chill signed an insurance policy Thursday in the form of Edna Campbell.
Chill owner/general manager Dave King signed the WNBA veteran guard as it has become apparent that Becky Hammon will not be able to start the season for the Chill. Hammon is recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered June 27, and does not expect to be on the court for at least another month.
The Chill opens it inaugural season in the National Women's Basketball League on Jan. 17 against the Houston Stealth. All Chill home games are played at the Budweiser Events Center on Interstate 25.
Campbell, a 5-foot-8 guard, brings a load of experience with her. She has played in the WNBA since 1999. She sat out all but one game in the 2002 season when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, but has since fully recovered. Campbell is the starting shooting guard for the Sacramento Monarchs, who advanced to the Western Conference Championships before falling in three games to Los Angeles.
Campbell averaged 7.9 points and 1.3 assists for Sacramento, and has career averages of 9.2 ppg and 1.7 apg. She will arrive in Fort Collins late Saturday night, and her first practice with the team will be during Sunday's intrasquad scrimmage game.
"Edna's a consummate professional athlete," Colorado Chill general manager Dave King said. "She's a great shooter, she has great touch and a great stroke. She'll give a nice veteran feel to the team."
Campbell will be returning to a state she loves. She played in the now-defunct ABL for the Colorado Xplosion from 1997-1998.
"I had a wonderful time in Colorado," Campbell said. "I have very fond memories of Colorado, and it's good to get back there."
Also, the Chill announced that they would cut off season ticket sales as of close of the business day on Tuesday, January 13 th . "As of today, we have filled 800 of the 1,000 tickets that were blocked off for season ticket sales" King announced.
