Colorado Chill Announces Player Signing

June 24, 2003 - National Women's Basketball League (NWBL) - Colorado Chill News Release

June 24, 2003 - The Colorado Chill announced the signing of its third player Tuesday as Angie Gorton-Nelp will join her former Colorado State University teammates on the professional court.

Gorton-Nelp graduated from CSU in 2002 and spent the past season playing overseas in Sweden. This year, however, she will stay in Fort Collins for a reunion with Becky Hammon and Katie Cronin.

Gorton-Nelp is a 6-foot versatile player who played everything from point guard to forward at CSU. She ranks among the schools top 10 in career leaders in 10 categories. Gorton-Nelp is sixth in career scoring (1,397 points), second in steals, third in free throws made, third in free throw percentage and third in blocked shots. She finished her senior season averaging 14.1 points per game, 5.8 rebounds per game and 2.7 assists per game.

The Chill is the newest team in the National Womens Basketball League, which plays January through April and has six teams. Triple Crown Sports, a sports marketing company based in Fort Collins, announced the acquisition of the Chill on April 16.

Gorton-Nelp was a freshman on the CSU team that advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in 1999. Hammon and Cronin were seniors that year.

Hammon, a 5-foot-6 guard, is now a star for the WNBA's New York Liberty and was an All-American at CSU. Hammon currently is seventh in the WNBA with 16.7 points a game and third in field-goal percentage at 57.7 percent. Cronin, a 6-foot wing player, was as an assistant basketball coach at Santa Clara University last year and now works for Triple Crown Sports in Fort Collins. Hammon and Cronin led CSUs rise to national prominence and the school's first-ever Top 10 ranking.

The Chill is in negotiations to play its home games at the new Budweiser Events Center at The Ranch, located just south of the Windsor exit on Interstate 25. It will be open for events in September.

The Colorado Chill is taking deposits now with priority given to fans who sign up early for the 2004 season. Call Triple Crown Sports at 970-223-6644 for more information. Also, log on to www.nwbl.com and click on the Colorado Chill logo.
