EAST HARTFORD, CT - MAY 4, 2011 - The coaching staffs for the Hartford Colonials and Virginia Destroyers of the United Football League will conduct open player tryouts May 21 at Sandy Creek High School in Tyrone, GA., just south of Atlanta.
The joint workout is an opportunity for players to showcase their talents for the UFL teams as each one looks to supplement the 2011 roster. Registration is 8-10 a.m. Participants are required to pay a non-refundable $80 registration fee in cash or money order. No checks or credit cards will be accepted.
Following the registration period, tryouts will commence with the 40-yard dash and short shuttle. There will be a series of position drills and 1-on-1's. Tryouts are expected to conclude at approximately 2 p.m.
The Colonials will also conduct open tryouts May 14 in Houston, TX, and June 4 in Middletown, CT.
"We will continue to look at areas that we need to fill," Colonials head coach and general manager Jerry Glanville said. "We spent a lot of draft picks on linemen, so we'll definitely be looking for people at the skilled positions - linebackers, running backs, wide receivers, tight ends. We have to find 10 more players with these camps."
UFL teams can have a maximum of 70 players on the preseason roster. Hartford's current provisional roster includes 35 players who played for the Colonials last year, 11 players selected in the UFL Draft on May 2, and 10 players on the reserve-unsigned list. The team will fill out its roster with free agents signings that will likely include former NFL players, UFL rookies and players who participate in the three tryouts.
A total of 672 players participated in three tryout camps for the Colonials last year. Running back Andre Dixon, center Tim Mattran, fullback Asaph Schwapp and cornerback Kyle Whitehurst were among the players on the 2010 roster who attended an open tryout.
Players participating in any tryouts must fill out an information form, workout injury waiver and present it at the time of registration. Forms and more information about tryouts can be found at www.ufl-football.com.
The UFL begins its third season in August as the Colonials play an eight-game schedule against teams from Las Vegas, Omaha, Sacramento and Virginia. The 2011 schedule will be announced in the coming weeks. For more team information, go to www.HartfordColonials.com.
