Cobras Suffer AFL Record-Tying 14th Loss

CHARLOTTE ­ The Carolina Cobras suffered their 14th consecutive loss on Sunday with a 57-38 defeat at the hands of the Chicago Rush in front of 5,751 fans at the Charlotte Coliseum. The loss tied the AFL records for losses in a single season and consecutive losses in a single season. The Rush improved to 7-7, winning for the fourth time in five games to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Chicago quarterback Billy Dicken completed 19-of-28 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns. AFL all-purpose yardage leader Antonio Chatman took home Game MVP honors with 227 all-purpose yards. He had 10 receptions for 119 yards and two touchdowns, three kickoff returns for 95 yards and a touchdown and one MFG return for 13 yards. Ironman Cornelius Bonner had three receptions for 52 yards and a score and returned a blocked extra point for two points.

Stewart Patridge finished 22-of-40 for 265 yards for the Cobras, with five touchdowns and two interceptions. With OS Bernard Holmes missing the game due to a strained calf muscle, Chris Johnson posted career-highs of 10 receptions, 115 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Alvin Ashley, who just joined the Cobras on Friday, added four receptions for 84 yards and two touchdowns and returned five kickoffs for 108 yards.

In five first-half possessions, the Rush had three touchdowns and one field goal, missing a field goal on their other possession. The Cobras meanwhile had two touchdowns and a field goal, missing two field goals and being intercepted once. Carolina had the ball inside the Chicago 10-yard line on three occasions in the first half and managed just three points on those possessions.

Chicago scored on each of their five possessions in the second half, posting four touchdowns and a field goal. The Cobras scored three touchdowns in five possessions in the second half, including two Johnson touchdown receptions in the fourth quarter.

SNAKE BITES: Chatman's kickoff return touchdown was the sixth given up by the Cobras this season.
