THURSDAY'S GAME
DETROIT 50, Buffalo 48 (Attendance: 4,713): The Detroit Fury (7-7) were able to run out the final 16 seconds in the game to hold on for the 50-48 win over the Buffalo Destroyers (5-9). Fury QB ANDY KELLY finished the game completing 25-of-45 for 214 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions. He completed passes to seven different receivers in the game.
SATURDAY'S GAMES
New York 43, LAS VEGAS 42 (Attendance: 10,301): In his first AFL start, New York QB WALTER CHURCH connected with WR/DB TODD DOXZON on a two-point conversion, after WR/DB DAMIEN GROCE scored on a 12-yard touchdown pass with 39 seconds remaining. The New York (6-8) victory moved them to within one game of the Eastern Division lead which is held by Las Vegas (7-7) and Detroit.
SAN JOSE 56, Grand Rapids 55 (Attendance: 13,406): San Jose QB MARK GRIEB threw a 9-yard scoring pass to JAMES ROE with four seconds left in regulation and ran for the 2-point conversion to give the San Jose SaberCats (10-4) a come-from-behind victory over the Grand Rapids (8-6). Despite the loss, the Rampage, who won the ArenaBowl title in 2001, clinched a playoff berth.
SUNDAY'S GAMES
Los Angeles 63, ARIZONA 49 (Attendance: 13,194): Los Angeles QB TONY GRAZIANI earned Game MVP honors, passing for 289 yards and eight touchdowns, including six to OS CHRIS JACKSON, as the Avengers (10-4) defeated Arizona (8-6) and maintained the lead in the Western Division and the No. 2 playoff seed. Despite the loss, the Rattlers clinched a playoff berth for the 11th time in team history.
Chicago 57, CAROLINA 38 (Attendance: 5,751): Chicago OS ANTONIO CHATMAN caught 10 passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns, while garnering 108 return yards including a 58-yard touchdown in the third quarter, as the Rush (7-7) knocked off the Cobras (0-14). With his performance, Chatman became the fourth player in AFL history to record 25 receiving touchdowns, 100 receptions, 1,000 receiving yards and 1,000 return yards in a single season.
Orlando 48, COLORADO 42 OT (Attendance: 17,47): Orlando FB/LB DUKE PETTIJOHN scored on a 1-yard run in overtime and teammate DS KENNY McENTYRE intercepted a JOHN DUTTON pass on Colorado's OT possession as the Predators (10-4) defeated the Crush (2-12). With three seconds remaining in regulation, Game MVP JAY GRUDEN connected with WR/DB LAMONT MOORE to send the game to overtime.
Tampa Bay 67, DALLAS 64 (Attendance: 10,368): Co-Ironman of the Game LAWRENCE SAMUELS recovered an onside-kick attempt by Dallas (8-6) with three seconds left in regulation to seal a victory for Tampa Bay (11-3), who remain the No.1 playoff seed after 14 games. Despite the loss, the Desperados clinched a playoff berth and will advance to the postseason for the second consecutive year.
Georgia 77, INDIANA 56 (Attendance: 13,271): Rookie QB LEON MURRAY passed for 307 yards and six touchdowns, including four to OS TYRONNE JONES, as the Force (8-6) clinched their first-ever playoff berth with a win over the Firebirds (5-9).
