Cobras open with exciting win
December 3, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Inglewood Cobras News Release
San Jose, CA. It looked like the Inglewood Cobras (1-0) had played some games already as they sneaked past the San Jose Skyrockets (3-2) in a thrilling American Basketball Association game at the San Jose Civic Auditorium this weekend. Instead, it was Inglewood's season opener and they looked as if they will be a team to reckon with this year.
The first quarter started out slower than usual for the Skyrockets as both teams shot poorly in the opening minutes and the score was only 11-11 with 5:45 to go. However, both teams began to warm up and San Jose led 26-22 with 1:443 remaining before closing out the quarter with a 30-26 lead.
The second period was fast paced as both teams found the range. The score was close throughout the period and was tied 48-48 with 1:32 left. Inglewood led at the half 52-49. The third period saw the Cobras stretch the lead to 9 points with 74-65 with 2:56 to go before closing out the period with an 83-78 lead.
The fourth quarter was about as good as it gets with no lead more than 5 points by either team. The Skyrockets tied the score at 85-85 and 91-91 and then took the lead 94-93 with 7:01 to go. The score was tied at 105-105 with 1:31 left in the game, but when Inglewood pulled ahead 107-105, the Skyrockets were not able to overtake the Cobras despite Inglewood missing several key free throws in the last minute and a half and held on for a 111-110 victory.
Kevin Bradley was high scorer for the Cobras with 29 points while Tarron Williams added 24. In an amazing display of long range shooting, newly acquired guard Matt Luedke sank six long three pointers and finished with 21 points. Lamar Castile also had 21 points. The Skyrockets had five players scoring in double figures. San Jose's next game was Sunday against the Tijuana Dragons at the Civic Auditorium, story to follow.
