Carolina Cobras News Release

RALEIGH, N.C. (May 7, 2002)- Carolina Cobras fullback/linebacker Andre Bowden was today named the Arena Football League's ADT Defensive Player of the Week for his outstanding performance in the Cobras 46-36 win over the Tampa Bay Storm last Saturday.

Bowden (6-1, 250, Fayetteville State) totaled 4.5 tackles, including 2.0 sacks and registered a safety in the Cobras win. He also contributed on the offensive side of the ball, scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run. A 9-year veteran of the AFL, Bowden has teamed with fellow FB/LB Marrio Grier to give the Cobras one of the best fullback/linebacker combinations in the Arena Football League.

Bowden is currently tied for third on the team with 10.0 tackles and leads the club with 2.0 sacks. His 2.0 sacks in three games also tie him for the AFL lead. Bowden, who is currently fourth all-time in career sacks with 33.5, joined the Cobras this off-season after an 8-year career with the Tampa Bay Storm (1991-93; 1997-2001). He won a pair of ArenaBowl championships with the Storm and was a two-time All-Arena First Team selection.

Bowden's selection as ADT Defensive Player of the Week marks only the second time in franchise history a Cobras' player has been honored with an AFL Weekly Award. Quarterback Fred McNair (23 of 34 for 258 yards and 7 TDs) was named the AFL's Offensive Player of the Week in week 6 last season after leading the Cobras to a 56-49 win over the New York Dragons on May 18, 2001.

The Cobras (2-1) will look to set a franchise record by winning their third consecutive game this Saturday, May 11, 7:30 p.m. when they travel to New Jersey to take on the Gladiators (2-1). The game can be heard live in the Raleigh area on WRBZ 850 The Buzz Sports Radio with Gary Hahn and Tony Haynes on the call.
