Coach's Corner with the Baltimore Mariners' Chris Simpson

May 6, 2010 - American Indoor Football Association (AIFA)
Baltimore Mariners News Release

BALTIMORE, MD (May 6, 2010) - We haven't won anything yet. Yes, we have eight victories versus no defeats. Yes, the fans are excited about our team and some of the media are starting to cover us. But, we haven't won anything yet.

As a coach, you have to keep, and put, things in perspective on a weekly basis. 8 - 0 means we have won eight games. We have not secured a playoff spot, we haven't clinched the Eastern Conference title, we haven't won the Eastern Conference Championship and we haven't been crowned the AIFA Champs. We haven't won anything yet.

Our win over Harrisburg this past weekend was a solid victory. This was the game I had marked on my calendar when we began our long road trip. This was the game that would set the benchmark for this organization at the halfway point of the season. Beating the Stampede puts us two games ahead of them and a clear step up in the tie breaking categories. I am proud of our staff, players and organization. We have worked hard to get this point of the season. We will continue to work hard to finish the remainder of the schedule just as strong.

The month of May is a welcome relief for us as a team. While we have two tough games remaining this month against Fayetteville and Richmond, the two byes will allow us to come back refreshed as players and staff. It also gives us an opportunity to get back to the fundamentals and to fine tune all three phases of our game.

Malcolm Forbes once stated, "Victory is sweetest when you've known defeat." Believe me, I have known defeat. I have heard the voices of decent and the cries of the critics. All of that has served its purpose and doesn't really matter now. We are going to enjoy this past victory and we are going to enjoy this bye week.
