Amarillo Venom News Release
CHICAGO - Amarillo Dusters Offensive Coordinator RICKEY FOGGIE has been selected as the SFC af2 Assistant Coach of the Year, as voted on by af2 head coaches and beat writers. This is the first season the league has named an Assistant Coach of the Year.
Foggie, in his first Arena Football coaching position, guided the expansion Dusters to league high 131 touchdowns and 55.8 points per game during the 2005 regular season. Under his tutelage, quarterback Julian Reese rushed for 28 touchdowns to tie an af2 record. As a team the Dusters rushed for an af2 record 48 touchdowns.
Offensive specialist Chavis McCollister racked up 1,866 receiving yards in just 14 games for an average of 133.3 yards per game. Had McCollister played in all 16 games, he would have been on pace to set a new league record for receiving yards in a season.
In the First Round of the 2005 ArenaCup playoffs, Foggie led the Dusters to a 59-56 road victory over the powerful Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz. The Dusters were down by 20 points in the fourth quarter but Foggie's offense scored 23 straight points to earn the victory. With the win the Dusters became the first expansion team since 2002 to win a playoff game.
Prior to his coaching career, Foggie played 10 seasons in the Canadian Football League and nine in the Arena Football League. He threw for 18,636 yards, 332 touchdowns with 82 interceptions, while running for 19 touchdowns over his AFL career. He totaled 14,009 yards and 91 touchdowns while playing in the CFL, appearing in three Grey Cup Championships. He also rushed for 2,536 yards. While in college, Foggie played four seasons for Lou Holtz at Minnesota and was named team MVP each year. He currently ranks 2nd all-time in total yardage and is a member of the Golden Gophers Hall of Fame.
"This is a great honor for Coach Foggie, he has definitely earned it," said Dusters Head Coach Steve Perdue. "He has so much knowledge of the game, and his ability to communicate that knowledge to young players is fun to watch."
