Barto named af2 Coach of the Year

CHICAGO - Memphis Xplorers Head Coach DANTON BARTO has been named the SFC af2 Coach of the Year, as voted on by af2 head coaches and beat writers.

Barto, in his fourth season as the Xplorers' head coach, has guided his club to the National Conference Championship Game for the first time in franchise history. They host the Rio Grande Valley Dorados Friday night at 8:30 p.m. ET.

Barto's Xplorers finished the regular season with a 13-3 record, the best single season record in franchise's history. In addition, a league high five Xplorers were named to All-af2 teams.

The Xplorers offense finished the regular season tied for the league lead in scoring with an average of 55.8 points per game. The defense finished the regular season allowing only 37.6 points per game, also best in the league. Barto handles both the offensive and defensive coordinator duties for the Xplorers.

Memphis has improved each season under Barto. Last season the Xplorers finished the season 10-6 and earned their first playoff berth in team history. Last week Barto guided the Xplorers to their first playoff victory in franchise history, defeating the Amarillo Dusters 71-30. Over the past two regular seasons, no coach has more wins than Barto's 23.

Barto played college football at the University of Memphis where he is still ranked number one in career tackles with 473. After college Barto had a five-year professional career in the Canadian Football League and Arena Football League.
