CO ICE Lose to Beef in Final Second

FORT COLLINS, CO - The ICE (3-3) had their victory snatched away in the final second by the Omaha Beef (5-2) Saturday, May 2, 2009, ending their three-game winning streak and generating a new heated rivalry between the two teams with the Beef winning 70-68.

Scoring went back and forth between the two teams the entire game. The Beef began the scoring right away with a 39-yard pass from QB James McNear to WR Mike Jones at the 14:30 mark. ICE RB Terry Washington answered with a 26-yard touchdown run at the 12:48 mark, making the score 6-6. DB Cortney Grixby of Omaha intercepted a pass from ICE QB Justin Holland at the 6:25 mark, running 15 yards into the endzone, making the score 13-6. ICE WR Cory Sleeth caught a 19-yard pass from Holland at the 5:16 mark, tying the score 13-13. Omaha answered with a 15-yard touchdown run by RB R.J. Rollins at the 2:23 mark and a 27-yard interception return by LB Spetlar Tonga at the 1:45 mark, making the score 27-13 Beef at the end of the 1st quarter.

Colorado started the scoring in the second quarter at 13:30 with a 25-yard field goal by K Rocky Stevens. Beef WR Allen Burrell caught a 8-yard pass from McNear, increasing the score to 34-16. ICE answered with a 2-yard pass from Holland to Sleeth at the 8:59 mark making the score 34-23. McNear connected with Beef WR Javon Bell at the 2:16 mark for another touchdown. ICE RB Eugene Reed ended the scoring of the first half at the 0:22 mark with a 4-yard run, making the score 41-30 Beef at halftime.

The ICE opened the 3rd quarter scoring at the 12:44 mark with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Holland to WR Justin Gallas, making the score 41-37. ICE DL Wayne Wilder gave the ICE their first lead with a 1-yard touchdown run at the 9:34 mark. With the score 44-41 ICE, Omaha K Ricky Lebeda tied the score at 3:53 with a 20-yard field goal. ICE regained the lead with Stevens' 44-yard field goal at the 1:16 mark, making the score 44-47.

The fourth quarter got intense with scoring literally going back and forth. Beef RB Rollins had a 2 yard run at the 11:46 mark, making the score 50-47 Beef. At the 9:54 mark, ICE RB Reed scored from 2-yards out, to put the ICE ahead 54-50. At 9:03 Beef QB McNear ran 16-yards for a touchdown, and at 8:22 ICE Gibson caught a 37-yard pass from Holland, allowing ICE to take the lead once more, 61-57. Omaha's Rollins answered with a 1-yard touchdown run at the 4:41 mark, but ICE answered with a 3-yard pass from Holland to Gibson with 44 seconds left, making the score 64-68 ICE. With 0:00.4 left on the clock, the Beef's McNear threw a 23-yard TD pass to Rollins in the endzone ending the game on a controversial play, followed by the Beef coaching staff running onto the field taunting and cursing the ICE home crowd. Final score 70-68 Beef.

The ICE take on Fairbanks Grizzlies for the second time this season this Saturday, May 9th at home. Kick-off is at 7 pm at the Budweiser Events Center.
