October 19, 2016 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada) - Halifax Hurricanes News Release

Halifax, NS -- The Halifax Hurricanes are pleased to announce the signing of Cliff Clinkscales to the team for the 2016-17 season.

Raised in Jamaica in Queens, New York City, and introduced to the game of basketball by his sister, Clinkscales was quickly recognized as a youngster with a special talent. Before the fifth grade, Clinkscales was noticed within a high performance camp then was featured in Slam Magazine, was labelled 'prodigy' by the National Post and appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show and the Rosie O'Donnell Show.

Cliff's college career began with the Blue Demons, DePaul University in Chicago, where he quickly gained fan attention, became a playmaker of the team and was nicknamed 'The Colonel'. After a successful four years with the Blue Demons, Clinkscales was picked 7th within the 9th round of the 2008 NBA Development League Draft by the Erie Bayhawks. In March of 2009 Clinkscales was then acquired by Grande Valley Vipers of the D-League. Released by the Vipers in November of 2009, Cliff found himself reunited with the Bayhawks and played a strong season.

In 2013, Cliff Clinkscales signed with the Panama City Breeze of the American Basketball League. The Breeze soon found themselves in serious financial troubles and were unable to pay their players.

In February of 2014, Clinkscales joined the Halifax Rainmen of the NBL of Canada where he quickly became a notable player and fan favourite. He finished the season averaging 11 points, 9.8 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game. Clinkscales re-signed with the Rainmen for the 2014-15 season and was a leader on and off the court.

In 2015, the Halifax Hurricanes were born and Cliff Clinkscales was named captain of the team. The now nicknamed 'Da General' was a clear fan favorite and could often be seen waving his arms to pump up the crowd during a home game. The Hurricanes posted a very strong regular season and dominated the first two rounds of the playoffs. The finals, versus the London Lightning, came down to game seven in Halifax and resulted in a presentation of the NBL Canada Championship trophy to captain Cliff Clinkscales. Cliff finished the season averaging 6.9 points, 8.0 assists 2.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game.

"Cliff has been a big time part of Halifax' success over the last two seasons," says Coach Kevin Keathley. "I believe without question that he has been one of the top true point guards in the NBL of Canada and I couldn't be happier to have Cliff back on board for the upcoming season. He understands time, score and late game situations. He's ball tough and values each possession and that's what you need to win big ball games."

"I am very excited to be returning to Halifax," remarks Clinkscales. "I love the city and all of our supporters. I'm ready to work hard and build a team to defend our title with Coach Keathley. Da General is back!"
