The Buzz Reading Program started in 1999 when four Burlington schools participated. In 2009, 409 classrooms and approximately 7,000 students from 28 different schools across all of Southeast Iowa and West Central Illinois participated in the program. The program kicks off each year in late winter and each student can earn up to four general admission tickets by reading books through the end of the school year. Twelve different public libraries across the region also use Bees tickets as an incentive for their summer reading programs with summer enrollment recorded at approximately 3,000 kids.
"We're very pleased that Westland Mall chose to partner with our Reading Program once again and help us reward area schools for their hard work," Bees Asst. General Manager Jared Schjei said. "I love this incentive because it encourages the kids to work as a team. Students not only read to earn free tickets to games, but can also earn a reward for their school."
Bees' mascot "Buzz" recently presented the checks to many of the winning classrooms. Those pictures can be seen at www.gobees.com. For more information on the reading program, please contact Jared Schjei at (319) 754-5705.
