(Cumberland County, Maine) --- Citizens for a Modern Civic Center officially kicked off its campaign around proposed renovations at the Cumberland County Civic Center this morning. Neal Pratt, Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Civic Center said, "The time is now for investment in a center of activity that benefits all of Cumberland County. The Civic Center brings in between 15-20 million dollars a year in economic impact. People from all over Cumberland County work at the Civic Center. An investment now is a win for every resident of the county."

The renovations will result in an enhanced experience for people who attend events at the civic center. There will be improvements and increase in restrooms; expansion of the concourse; new seating including premium seating; increase in concession stands; major improvements for handicap access and seating and numerous other necessary upgrades. The loading dock on Center Street will also be upgraded providing better service to acts using the facility.

The 34 year old facility has never had a substantial renovation leaving it at a lesser advantage of attracting acts than newer facilities around New England. Neal Pratt said, "This renovation comes at a fraction of the cost of a new facility. We are looking at a 33 million dollar investment instead of a minimum of 100 million to build new. Now is the time to push forward with the bond proposal, interest rates are low, people are looking for work so construction costs will be very competitive and we expect no increase in taxes. People from all over Maine have enjoyed this space from Disney on Ice, to high school graduations and basketball games."

Cumberland County residents will vote on the referendum question on November 8th. For Jpegs of the renderings contact Crystal at Crcanney@yahoo.com
