Cincinnati Kings News Release
KEENE, N.H. (August 2, 2006) - The Cincinnati Kings dropped into a tie for third place after falling to the New Hampshire Phantoms on the road, 3-1, on Wednesday night. The Kings and Phantoms each have 27 points and are holding the last two playoff spots in the United Soccer Leagues Second Division with three games remaining for both teams.
The Kings were victimized by Almir Barbosa of the Phantoms as he netted a natural hat-trick for New Hampshire exactly one week after the Kings' own John Krause netted his natural hat-trick against Long Island. Barbosa got all his work done early scoring in the 2nd, 4th, and 17th minutes for the Phantoms.
Although down 3-0, the Kings awakened and controlled the final 70 minutes of play. However, they were only able to convert one of many chances in the second half. Jon Caldwell scored the Kings' lone goal in the 46th minute.
The Kings outshot the Phantoms, 7-6.
The Kings were without starters Derek Smith, Josh Barton, and Trey Alexander. Smith had to sit out due to a red card violation in the Kings' last game and Barton and Alexander were forced to sit due to yellow card accumulations over the course of the season. Tiest Sondaal picked up his fifth yellow card of the season tonight and will likely have to sit out the August 12 home finale against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.
The loss drops the Kings record to 8-6-3. The Kings remain on the road as they travel to Harrisburg to take on the City Islanders on Saturday evening at 7:05 p.m. This will be the fourth and final meeting between the Kings and City Islanders with the Kings currently holding a 2-1 series advantage this year.
