Cincinnati Kings News Release
CINCINNATI--The Cincinnati Kings halted the Harrisburg City Islanders' franchise record five game winning streak Friday night with a 2-2 tie in United Soccer Leagues action at the Xavier University Soccer Complex.
A crowd of 1,217 saw Cincinnati get on the board first with a score by Kings forward Jeff Hughes in the 43rd minute, with the assist from George Kithas. "Our first half performance was excellent," said Head Coach Jon Pickup. "Our attitude, effort and consistency could not have been better."
The Kings held the 1-0 lead into the second half, when City Islanders' midfielder Sumed Ibrahim scored in the 53rd minute. Harrisburg then scored its second goal on the night 11 minutes later, from forward Bernie Showers.
The City Islanders clamped down on defense in the second half, until Kithas scored for the Kings in the 70th minute, and Cincinnati kept Harrisburg scoreless the rest of the way to preserve the tie.
"I was disappointed in the second half," said Pickup. "We could have had two quick goals in the first couple of minutes in the second half, and it would be game over. We've talked about consistency from game to game, but it needs to go from half to half as well. If we focus and if we play well, we can match anybody in this league."
Harrisburg had nine shots on goal to the Kings' 16, and each team had four saves in net.
Harrisburg is now 6-4-1 in USL Second Division action, while the Kings stand at 4-4-4.
The Kings' next game will be on the road on Friday, July 1 at the Charlotte Eagles, with a game the next night at the Wilmington Hammerheads. Their next home game will be Saturday, July 9, against Charlotte.
